Surfing was introduced to the beaches of Ericeira in the 1970s and has since become an important part of Portuguese surfing culture. Famous professional surfer Thiago Pires grew up in Ericeira and the Surfing World Cup takes place there. There are also many businesses operating in the surfing industry in this area.

In addition to the many surfing schools and competitions, the annual Quiksilver Pro Portugal event takes place on the Ribeira da Ilhas beach.

Spending a few weeks in this historic fishing village is like exploring Portugal without ever leaving the country. Surfers can choose from 10 different surfing spots and 15 different schools to suit their skill level. To stay at a hotel, rent a board, and purchase a wetsuit, and take daily surfing lessons for around 450-600 euros per week.
