One of the most well-known carnivals in Portugal takes place in the city of Torres Vedras. The official website of the event dates the first recorded mention of the festival back to 1574, when Geronimo de Miranda, a local resident of Torres Vedras at the time, complained about young people "running around like roosters" on Carnival Day, as documented by the Office of King Sebastian. In 2022, the event was designated as a national cultural heritage, and it is commonly referred to as the "most traditional Portuguese carnival." The festival features a wide range of social, performance, and ritual activities, including allegorical parades, the symbolic appearance of the King and Queen of the Carnival, and traditional figures such as mataphones and dummies. This year's event, themed "50 Years, April 25th," will run from February 28th to March 5th and return to the streets of Torres Vedras once again.
