The Night Sky Show: Jupiter and Saturn are getting closer and closer

By Luke86 | Astrofacts | 15 Dec 2020

The two solar system giants are having an ever closer conjunction.

After the total solar eclipse seen in Chile and Argentina, the night sky gives you another great show. Just after the sunset, 2 hours long period, Jupiter and Saturn are clearly visible to South-West, one close to the other. Astronomically they're having a "conjunction", an astronomical phenomenon in which two celestial body are apparently close. Yes, obviously, they're not close for real, but we can see them close due to their motion across the Universe.

A conjunction can happen when two, or even more, celestial body get apparently close, most of the time under a celestial distance of less 10 degrees. This means that one of these body is necessarly a Solar System component. This is very important, cause you can deduce a simple theory:

a conjunction can happen as more often as the considered celestial body owns a FAST MOTION.

Because of this reason, there will be more conjunction with the Moon (very fast motion), than with Pluto or Neptune (very slow motion) but....

..is not enough!

Yes, there is another important fact you ha ve to consider: all of the Solar System bodies stay on the Ecliptical plan, with very little deviations from this plan, or better say "line", cause we can not see a plan, we can only imagine a line. So we can assume that

just the celestial bodies near the Ecliptical line can fall in a conjuction

This is the theory.. The practice is this:

So, prepare your scopes or your cameras to catch this beautiful close encounter!
