The weekend's quite frosty winter weather sent me to a bench where most birds come. Among other things, a jackdaw flies there.

Weekendowa, zimowa dość mroźna pogoda skierowała mnie na ławeczkę, gdzie przylatuje najwięcej ptaków. Między innymi przylatuje tam kawka.

Today, however, quite a lot of them appeared, and they were extremely talkative, feisty, active, and there were lots of them everywhere.

Dzisiaj jednak pojawiło się ich dość wiele, a do tego były strasznie gadatliwe, zadziorne, ruchliwe, wszędzie było ich pełno.

I was wondering why the jackdaw sits in deep snow when the frost is quite severe. This would seem like irrational behavior.

Zastanawiało mnie, dlaczego kawka siada w głębokim śniegu, gdy mróz jest dość mocny. Wydawało by to się irracjonalnym zachowaniem.

But this behavior has its justification. When crouching in the snow, the jackdaw covers its legs with thick feathers, thus warming them. They are quite sensitive to low temperatures, especially their upper part.

Ale takie zachowanie ma swoje uzasadnienie. Kucając w śniegu kawka przykrywa gęstymi piórami swoje nogi, ocieplając je w ten sposób. Są one bowiem dość wrażliwe na niskie temperatury, szczególnie ich górna część.

But apart from such a phenomenon, I noticed another, interesting, social behavior of birds today. At some point they met in one place and, sitting opposite each other, they started making some sounds as if they were having a very important discussion. It looked fun.

Ale poza takim zjawiskiem, zauważyłem dzisiaj inne, ciekawe, społeczne zachowanie ptaków. W pewnym momencie spotkały w jednym miejscu, i siedząc na przeciwko siebie zaczęły wydawać z siebie jakieś dźwięki, jakby prowadziły bardzo ważną dyskusję. Wyglądało to zabawnie.

There were also some arguments and misunderstandings, almost like people do. Here, the young jackdaw seemed to have been reprimanded by the elders and she tucked her head into her feathers, expressing remorse.

Było też trochę sprzeczek, nieporozumień, prawie jak u ludzi. Tu chyba młoda kawka dostała reprymendę od starszyzny, i aż skuliła głowę w pióra, wyrażając w ten sposób skruchę.
