Strobilomyces strobilaceus Roe deer has different names in Poland. The mushroom has a hat with a diameter of up to 25 cm. Color from gray-brown to gray-black, densely covered with thick, lumpy, lamellar, protruding, soft scales with gray tips. The young fruiting body is hemispherical, then becomes convex and finally flat. The surface of the hat is dry. On the brim of the hat, you can see the remains of an off-white wool cover, often with fringes. From the bottom there are no plates or tubes, only spikes. They are whitish, older gray-brown with a reddish tinge.

The foot of the mushroom is mushroom-colored, covered with gray-brown streaks, long, cylindrical, full. It has a whitish, padded ring that disappears quickly. Sponge flesh, whitish, becomes darker with age, black. The taste is pleasant, the smell is slightly earthy.

Occurrence: The fungus is rare. In Poland, it is on the Red List of Endangered Plants and Fungi. It appears from July to October in deciduous, mixed and coniferous forests, most often under patches, fir and beech trees in soils rich in nutrients (does not like sandy soils). Most often it can be found in the mountains. Value: Edible mushroom
