Hi guys,
In this blog, I'm trying to discuss why Arabic is very different from other languages. I will challenge myself and will put challenges for you, to make it fun. My plan is to start with few rules that we can use to start this journey.
I believe this blog will be of interest to a number of people:
1. Those who have general interest in languages but don't plan to learn a specific language (this might push you more to start learning Arabic)
2. Enthusiasts who want to venture into learning Arabic as a medium of communication and those who have already started
3. Students and Academics who study and teach Arabic
4. Those who are fascinated with Middle Eastern cultures, and Arabia in particular and want to expand their knowledge and make sure that fascination is placed correctly
5. Those who are Muslims but don't speak Arabic and want to know more about the language behind Quran
6. The general public and people who just like reading (this might be an interesting topic for you)
7. Those who have Arabic texts that they wish to know more about (translation into Arabic that is)
I initially planned this blog to help translate some Arabic poetry and Quran verses to non-Arabs, but the idea of having it in a blog got the best out of me.
My mother tongue is Arabic, but I acquired few languages as I grew up. I studied in an American University, so this is when my English really picked up. I've done my BSc., then my MBA. nothing related to Arabic, but I was/am planning to do my PhD in Old Arabic. This requires more undergrad. course that I would hope for, but I have no issues. I have the stamina and the time to do it, while working from home.
My initial plan is to discuss the following titles:
100. Discuss languages and how they developed in general (Academic knowledge, my own view, other views)
200. The roots of the Arabic language (how it started, where, when, why, by whom, ...)
300. Why the Arabic language different than all other languages
400. Why the Arabic language continues to grow despite many interruptions
500. How to learn Arabic (this will give you an idea about the time-frame, effort, tools, practice that is needed)
600. Old Arabic Poetry (my passion)
700. Quran and the Arabic Language (the whole story)
800. Future of the Arabic Language (will it survive the real test of time?)
900. My journey with the Arabic language and how you can plan your own journey
Please note that the above topics are in no chronological order. They will be mingled, we will discuss parts of them at different times. This is why will be using the numbering system that you see on the left side of each topic, which has additional zeros that that you can easily track a specific topic in this series.
If you wish to add any other topics, or you have specific questions, please don't hesitate to let me know and ask all your questions in the comments. I will be delving into every single comment and will build a database so that no question gets unanswered.
My original plan is to have 1 major post done every week, with few short snippets added (maybe on a daily basis). These daily snippets will depend on the interaction and the volume of questions.
I hope you let me know if you're interested and if so, please let me know where you want us to start. This will be done on a first-come first-serve basis.
Thank you so much if you've gone through this article to this point. Please do leave a note if you have any comments , or if you even want to have something specific translated into Arabic. Trust me, google does not do justice when translating into Arabic lol but that's another topic. My humble request is that you provide a brief about yourself and why you have interest in Arabic, whenever you post a comment or a question, as this would help me greatly in providing you with the best possible response.
Regards to all.
