If you have been keeping an eye on the cryptocurrency markets over the past several weeks, you have probably noticed the strong upward momentum and rising interest surrounding the NEAR token. While short-term price action always gets people talking on social media, looking purely at trading charts misses the real story unfolding beneath the surface. Green candles come and go with market cycles, but the projects that survive and thrive over the long haul are the ones building infrastructure that solves massive, real-world technological problems.
About a month ago, I decided to take a personal position in the NEAR token and test out native staking firsthand. I wanted to see how the network actually functions, examine the user experience of its native wallet, and observe how the staking rewards compound in real time.
What began as a hands-on technical experiment quickly led me down a fascinating rabbit hole. NEAR is not trying to be just another generic alternative to Ethereum. It is engineering the foundational financial and computational rails for the emerging autonomous artificial intelligence economy.
We are standing on the precipice of an era where digital life will no longer be driven solely by human beings clicking on smartphone screens. The future is looking more and more agent-focused, populated by autonomous software agents that research data, execute tasks, trade assets, and negotiate contracts on our behalf.
Those autonomous agents cannot open traditional checking accounts, sign physical credit card receipts, or use corporate payment processors. They require native, programmable cryptographic rails capable of handling tens of thousands of instant transactions for fractions of a cent.
By combining the vision of User-Owned AI with high-speed dynamic sharding and multichain abstraction, NEAR is positioning itself as the primary transaction layer for this new world. To understand why this network matters for the future of technology, we need to trace the team’s fascinating AI origins, break down how native staking actually pays out, explore the mechanics of Nightshade sharding, and connect the dots between decentralized storage and autonomous agent commerce.
From Google Brain to the Blockchain
To understand why NEAR is so deeply aligned with artificial intelligence, you have to look at the backgrounds of the engineers who created it. The project was not founded by finance executives or crypto-native traders, it was built by elite computer scientists who helped birth modern AI.
The network was co-founded in 2018 by Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov. Before entering the blockchain space, Illia was an artificial intelligence researcher at Google Brain, where he served as a co-author of the seminal 2017 research paper titled Attention Is All You Need. That single academic paper introduced the Transformer architecture to the world, the exact neural network breakthrough that powers ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and every frontier language model operating today.
His co-founder, Alexander Skidanov, was a lead software engineer at Microsoft and the director of engineering at MemSQL, specializing in distributed database architecture and high-performance concurrent computing.
When Illia and Alexander originally teamed up, they were not trying to build a blockchain. They launched a startup called NEAR.ai, focused on teaching machine-learning models to write software code automatically.
As they built their AI synthesis engines, they ran headfirst into a massive structural wall. They realized that in order for autonomous software programs to coordinate with one another, hire human contractors across the globe, and pay for distributed computing power, they needed an open, programmable, and decentralized settlement rail.
Every existing blockchain at the time was too slow, too expensive, or fundamentally incapable of scaling to meet that computational demand. Recognizing that decentralized infrastructure was the missing ingredient required to prevent artificial intelligence from becoming a closed corporate monopoly, the founders pivoted to build NEAR Protocol, launching its mainnet in 2020 with human-readable account names and a native architecture designed for high-throughput scaling.
Breaking the Corporate Monopoly
The driving mission pushing the NEAR ecosystem forward today is a philosophical and technological movement known as User-Owned AI.

In the corporate technology sector, artificial intelligence is expanding at the expense of human privacy and sovereignty. Trillion-dollar tech conglomerates scrape human creative output from the public web, feed that data into massive closed-source neural networks hosted on proprietary server farms, and rent access back to consumers through expensive monthly subscriptions. When you interact with a centralized cloud model, your prompts are logged, your data is used to train corporate assets, and the provider reserves the legal right to restrict what you are allowed to ask.
As articulated in public research publications on the NEAR Portal on User-Owned AI, the team is engineering a decentralized counter-model rooted in open-source weights, cryptographic verification, and confidential computing.
User-Owned AI ensures that individuals own their personal AI models, retain absolute sovereignty over their private data, and hold verifiable governance over the algorithms that shape their daily digital lives.
By combining zero-knowledge cryptography with decentralized execution environments, NEAR allows users to deploy autonomous agents that analyze private financial records and personal health data locally, ensuring that the model acts strictly in the user’s best interest without transmitting unencrypted telemetry to corporate server farms.
Built for Billions of Bots
If millions of autonomous software agents begin executing micro-transactions, buying data shards, and interacting with smart contracts simultaneously, traditional monolithic blockchains will grind to a halt under extreme network congestion and skyrocketing gas fees.

To solve the blockchain trilemma without compromising decentralization, NEAR utilizes a proprietary dynamic sharding architecture known as Nightshade. Detailed technical specifications on the NEAR Protocol Network and Validator Documentation explain how Nightshade divides the blockchain state into parallel partitions called shards.
Unlike older systems where every validator node is forced to process every single transaction on the entire network, NEAR validators only process transactions within specific shards.
With the mainnet rollout of Nightshade 2.0 and stateless validation, validator hardware requirements dropped dramatically, allowing the network to dynamically spin up new shards as transaction volume surges. This gives the blockchain near-infinite horizontal scalability with sub-second block finality and transaction fees that consistently cost less than a fraction of a penny.
Complementing this raw throughput is a breakthrough known as Chain Abstraction. In the legacy crypto space, using multiple blockchains is a miserable experience requiring users to bridge assets, manage different gas tokens, and hold multiple seed phrases.
Through account aggregation and multichain signatures, a single NEAR account can control addresses and sign cryptographic transactions across Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Solana.
An autonomous AI agent running on NEAR does not need to worry about the underlying blockchain piping. The agent can hold funds on NEAR, sign a trade on a decentralized exchange on Solana, and settle an asset directly onto the Bitcoin blockchain through a single unified interface, turning NEAR into the central operating system for cross-chain agentic commerce.
How the Ledger Stays Honest
A high-speed blockchain is completely useless if it sacrifices decentralization and security to achieve its performance numbers. NEAR secures its global state through a delegated Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism known as Doomslug.
Doomslug allows validator nodes to reach consensus and achieve practical finality in a single round of communication, ensuring that transactions are confirmed almost instantaneously while maintaining mathematical defense against chain reorganizations.
The security of the network is distributed across hundreds of independent validator pools and chunk-only producers situated across the globe, ensuring that no single corporate entity or mining cartel holds unilateral control over transaction ordering.
The economic model of the NEAR token is mathematically engineered to align long-term security with network utility. The protocol operates with a baseline annual inflation rate of roughly five percent, with the vast majority (ninety percent of that newly minted supply) allocated directly to active validators and delegators as staking rewards for securing the consensus layer, while the remaining ten percent funds the protocol treasury.
To counterbalance this issuance, NEAR implements an aggressive transaction fee-burning mechanism. Seventy percent of every network transaction fee is permanently burned and removed from circulation, while the remaining thirty percent is automatically rebated to the smart contract developers who generated the activity.
During periods of high on-chain utilization and heavy agentic traffic, the volume of burned tokens can outpace the protocol’s inflation, introducing powerful deflationary pressure that directly benefits long-term token holders.
My Personal Experience and Compounding Epochs
When I decided to invest a little capital into the NEAR token about a month ago, I wanted to test the staking mechanics myself to see how smoothly the process worked for an everyday holder. I transferred my tokens into a native, non-custodial NEAR wallet, navigated to the staking dashboard, and selected an independent validator pool with a solid uptime record and reasonable commission fees.
The process of staking on NEAR is remarkably clean and rewarding. Staking yields on the network currently hover between seven and nine percent annualized APY, depending on the total percentage of the circulating supply that is locked in the consensus layer and the specific validator fees you choose.
What makes staking on NEAR particularly satisfying compared to other Proof-of-Stake networks is the mechanics of its epoch system. As detailed in the official NEAR Protocol Network Epoch Architecture Guide, an epoch represents a standardized operational window measuring exactly forty-three thousand two hundred blocks.
With NEAR targeting block times just over a second, an epoch typically completes every twelve to fifteen hours. Each epoch, the network calculates your validator’s performance, issues your staking rewards, and automatically compounds those rewards directly back into your active staked balance (or into NPRO which is the NEAR mobile wallet token).
You do not have to log in every week, pay manual gas fees to claim your earnings, or manually re-delegate your rewards. Your balance quietly grows and compounds twice every single day, working silently in the background while you go about your life.
If you ever decide that you want to exit your staking position and sell or transfer your tokens, the network implements a strict security unbonding period of four complete epochs, which translates to roughly two to two-and-a-half days (around forty-eight to sixty hours).
During those four epochs, your tokens stop earning rewards while the consensus layer safely un-delegates your stake. Once the unbonding window passes, your tokens unlock completely, ready to be withdrawn back into your liquid wallet balance with a single click.
Why Data Storage and Financial Rails Must Unite
To appreciate where the technology is heading, you have to connect the different layers of the decentralized tech stack. Artificial intelligence agents cannot function in an isolated vacuum. They require an integrated ecosystem of decentralized tools to operate with true independence.
In previous articles, we explored the critical importance of decentralized, permanent crowd storage networks like Autonomi. A sovereign AI agent needs a place to store its long-term memory, its training datasets, and its private document archives without worrying that a corporate cloud provider will shut down its account or scan its private thoughts.
Autonomi provides that un-censorable, peer-to-peer storage layer, allowing agents to deposit and retrieve encrypted shards across a global crowd-storage network.
Storage alone, however, is only half of the puzzle. An autonomous agent that can remember things but cannot transact is essentially paralyzed.
An agent needs an un-censorable, low-cost financial pipeline to pay for the decentralized storage it consumes on Autonomi, purchase GPU processing cycles from decentralized compute grids, hire other specialized AI agents to analyze code, and settle financial trades across decentralized finance protocols.
This is precisely where NEAR slots into the machine economy. NEAR provides the programmable, lightning-fast currency layer that autonomous agents can interact with natively through smart contracts.
When you pair permanent, decentralized crowd storage with a hyper-scalable, multichain transaction engine, you create the complete, sovereign nervous system for an autonomous digital workforce that operates entirely outside the walls of Big Tech.
Building the Sovereign Infrastructure of Tomorrow
Taking a step back from the daily volatility of cryptocurrency price charts allows you to see the technological landscape with sober clarity. The explosive rise of artificial intelligence is the dominant macro trend of our lifetime, but allowing that intelligence to be locked inside the proprietary server farms of a handful of Silicon Valley monopolies represents an existential threat to human freedom, privacy, and economic opportunity.
True technological progress does not come from renting your digital life from a corporate landlord. It comes from building, owning, and maintaining sovereign tools that belong to the people.
NEAR Protocol represents a profound technological bet on that open future. By uniting the original architects of modern AI with the unstoppable power of decentralized sharded consensus, the network is building the highway upon which the next century of autonomous commerce will travel.
Testing out native staking and exploring these decentralized networks firsthand is more than just a smart financial strategy, it is an active education in the digital tools that will define our future.
The machine economy is coming faster than most people realize, and the autonomous agents that will inhabit it will need an open, neutral, and scalable financial language to communicate with one another. By understanding the technology, taking self-custody of our assets, and supporting decentralized rails, we ensure that as the world transitions into the age of artificial intelligence, human sovereignty and digital freedom remain firmly anchored at the center of the machine.
