The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
“There will come a time upon people when their stomachs will be their gods, their women will be their qibla (direction of worship), their dinars (wealth) will be their religion, and their status will be measured by their possessions. Nothing will remain of faith except its name, nothing will remain of Islam except its form, and nothing will remain of the Qur’an except its recitation. Their mosques will be filled with construction, but their hearts will be devoid of guidance. Their scholars will be the worst creatures under the heavens. At that time, Allah will test them with four things: oppression from rulers, drought in their time, injustice from leaders and judges.” The Companions were astonished and said,
“O Messenger of Allah, will they worship idols?” He said, “Yes, every dirham (coin) with them is an idol.”
Today, we live in a world heavily focused on materialism, where wealth, appearance, and status often overshadow deeper values. Many prioritize financial success and luxury over personal growth, relationships, or spirituality. Consumer culture has made us increasingly focused on possessions, with social media often fueling comparisons and a desire for more. In relationships, superficial qualities sometimes take precedence over genuine connections, and personal satisfaction is often placed above community welfare. Even places of worship can sometimes focus more on appearance than fostering a sense of spiritual purpose. This shift challenges us to find balance and refocus on values that truly matter.
