When Ethereum was going to change, everyone thought there would be a market boom, but it happened the opposite, Ethereum lost its strength, and so many people were uncertain about Ethereum. What changed then, what are its advantages and disadvantages?
The change of Ethereum from a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus algorithm to a Proof of Stake (PoS) algorithm has several positive and negative points.
Positives:
- Scalability: PoS is considered more scalable than PoW because it requires fewer computational resources to validate transactions. This means that the Ethereum network will be able to process more transactions per second, which is important for high-traffic applications such as games and decentralized finance.
- Security: PoS has less risk of 51% attacks than PoW, as it is more expensive and difficult to control the majority of validators on the network.
- Energy consumption: PoW is known to consume large amounts of energy, while PoS consumes less energy, which is beneficial for the environment.
- Incentives: PoS offers financial incentives to validators, which can increase participation in the network and improve security.
Negatives:
- Complexity: the transition to PoS is considered more complex than maintaining PoW, as it involves several steps and software updates. This can make it difficult to adopt and implement new applications on the Ethereum network.
- Centralization: PoS may lead to greater centralization of the network, as validators with more ETH at stake will have a higher chance of being selected. This can decrease decentralization and resistance to censorship of the Ethereum network.
- Stake loss risk: validators put their own ETH at risk to validate transactions. If a validator does not follow the rules of the network, he may lose part or all of his staked ETH.
Is it still worth investing even after the change?
Even so, the shift to PoS has the potential to improve scalability, security and efficiency of the Ethereum network, which can increase interest and adoption of the applications built on it. This is not a buy indication, however, the potential of Ethereum may be 5x more in the next bull run.
