At about 11:00 local time, a gunman walked onto the Perm State University campus in Russia and opened fire, killing 6 people and injuring 28 others. The assailant wielded a gun and a knife, and was identified as a student at the university. Eyewitness reports say that students and university staff jumped out of windows to flee the shooter. Authorities announced that the attacker was shot during an exchange of gunfire and injured by police officer Konstanin Kalinin, who was one of the first to arrive at the scene.
As of now, the gunman is in police custody. While the motive behind the shooting is still unclear, he reportedly said he had no political or religious motives. Russia's Investigative Committee says that the attacker's weapon was a "smoothbore hunting weapon" and that the man had a license for a shotgun, though no further information about the shooter was released yet. A witness reported seeing the attacker in a bulletproof vest and helmet, but this has not yet been confirmed nor denied by authorities.
In a statement President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and called the shooting a "great loss not only for the families who lost their children but for the whole country". This is Russia's second mass shooting to target students in 2021.
