Australians to be Offered Half-Off Flights to Boost Tourism

In an attempt to revive and kickstart the local tourism sector, the Australian government announced a 1,200,000,000 Australian dollar (About 930,000,000 United States dollars) plan that offers Australians half-price flights to 13 domestic holidays spots. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said that 800,000 cheaper airfares will be offered between April and July to encourage citizens to visit other parts of the country and boost the tourism industry, which has been one of the hardest hit sectors due to border closures and travel restrictions. Destinations eligible for the discount include the Gold Coast, Kangaroo Island, Avalon, Launceston, and Merimbula. While praised by some, several members of the opposition Australia Labor Party argue that the package is "selective", primarily benefiting airlines as opposed to tour and hotel operators, and that some of the selected locations were already popular tourist hotspots.

Local sources say that Qantas and Jetstar are expected to provide a bulk of the discounted flights while Virgin Australia is also expected to provide discounted flights, but to a smaller amount. Regional Airlines are also eligible for the discounted flights as long as routes have been operating for the past 2 years. Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack stated that he held discussions with the airlines, and received "assurance" that the companies will not artificially increase their prices, though no mechanism was announced to monitor and enforce this.
