Authorities of the Democratic Republic of Congo state that at least 12 rangers and several civilians were killed and 4 others were injured after suspected members of the Rwandan Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) rebel group launched an ambush near the Rumangabo village in the Virunga National Park. Director General of the Congolese Institute for Nature Conservation Cosma Wilungula stated that the attack is among the deadliest in recent history, involved about 5 dozen armed men firing upon civilians protected by rangers, and was targeting civilians rather than rangers.

A statement by the Virunga National Park stated that "Virunga Park Rangers were not the target of the assault, but lost their lives responding to the attack in defense of the local population". As of now, the FDLR has made no public statement against accusations.
