Moussa Faki, the chairperson of the African Union commission, has condemned United States President Donald J. Trump over the United States' decision to halt its funding of the World Health Organization. Mr. Faki called the act "deeply regrettable" and said that "today more than ever, the world depends on WHO's leadership". Analysts say that the cessation of American funding will have devastating consequences especially in Africa, where the WHO fills funding gaps, helps purchase essentials, and fight crippling diseases such as HIV, malaria, tuberculosis, and more recently, the Covid-19 coronavirus.
The US is the single largest funder of the WHO, providing approximately 15% of its total budget of 4.2 billion United States dollars. Meanwhile, Bill Gates, a major funder of the World Health Organization, stated that the United States' decision is "as dangerous as it sounds" and that "the world needs WHO now more than ever".

Meanwhile, President Trump accuses the WHO of placing too much trust in the People's Republic of China and "severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus". A White House statement later read that the WHO "failed" the American people.
