4 minutes after taking off, Sriwijaya Air Flight SJ182 with service from the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport in Jakarta to the Supadio International Airport of the Pontianak province disappeared from radar and crashed into the sea. The 26 year-old Boeing 737-524 was carrying 50 passengers and 12 crew members, all Indonesian Nationals, when it crashed, and all 62 people are thought to have perished. Over 10 ships and 4 aircraft were deployed, and Indonesian officials say that the location of the crash has been found. As of now, navy divers and recovery teams have found body parts, an aircraft wheel, and what is believed to be a part of the fuselage.

Flight trackers indicate that the aircraft dropped over 3,000 meters (about 10,000 feet) in under a minute and witnesses say that they had seen and/or heard an explosion. Air traffic controllers on duty say that there were no distress calls, though the aircraft had failed to follow instructed flight direction. Due to heavy rain, the plane's takeoff time was initially pushed back by about half an hour. As of now, the cause of the crash is still unknown, and search and rescue efforts are underway.
