Fighting involving tank, armored vehicles, and artillery broke out on the border between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces, resulting in at least 16 deaths. Armenia reported that four of its soldiers, including two officers, were killed while Azerbaijan defense officials say that 11 soldiers and a civilian were killed. The Azerbaijani Ministry of Defense verified that Major General Polad Hashimov and Colonel Ilgar Mirzayev are among the dead while the civilian death was cause by Armenian artillery shelling. As of now, both sides accuse each other of firing at civilian areas on the border between Tavush, Armenia, and Tovuz, Azerbaijan.

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan were part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) before its collapse and dissolution in the early 1990s. Since then, the two nations have seen conflict over a disputed territory known as Nagorno-Karabakh, which is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but controlled by ethnic Armenians.

As a result of the conflict, thousands of civilians marched through the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, demanding the nation fully deploy the military to engage Armenian forces and retake Nagorno-Karabakh. According to local sources, security forces used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters. This was one of the largest public gatherings seen in Azerbaijan in years, with some media groups reporting up to 30,000 people taking part.
