I believe West Virginia's capitol is the most beautiful state capitol complex in the United States. If that isn't so then you will have to convince me. Modeled after the nation's capitol, the main building with a gilded gold dome sets majestically near the Kanawha River in the City of Charleston, WV. The premises have well-kept landscaping and striking sculptures that celebrate the famous people and everyday heroes of West Virginia.

Above: The north side of the West Virginia Capitol Building features a replica of the Liberty Bell given to the state by France.
One of the famous people featured on the grounds of the capitol complex is Booker T. Washington who was born a slave but rose to prominence as an educator and proponent for the advancement of people of color.

The coal miners of West Virginia are also honored for their workday heroics:

The beautiful landscaping is enough to make it worth a trip to see. However, there is also a museum on the capitol complex that is amazing with animatronics and first-class audio in a self-guided tour you can take at the Culture Center Building. The admission is free to this museum that cost millions to upgrade. Visitors to Charleston, WV will want to be sure to browse the history and culture exhibits that take you on a timeline journey from prehistory to the present. The museum is closed Sundays and Mondays and some holidays so plan your trip accordingly. For more information see their website: West Virginia Culture Center

Just to note in the picture above of the Culture Center Building that the self-guided museum tour takes up the entire basement floor of this massive building. Be sure to budget some time to take it all in.
After at least a half a day spent on the Capitol Complex you may want to try some of the local restaurants that are in walking distance. Yes, there are the usual fast-food places (McDonalds, Wendys, Taco Bell, Subway) but you should try some of the unique flavor of local establishments. All of the local restaurants are within walking distance on Washington Street just west of the Capitol Complex and the walk is pedestrian friendly.

If you like burgers, wings, tacos (try their fish taco) then maybe Tricky Fish should be where you stop. They have indoor and outdoor dining during the warm months.

Update: The Bluegrass Kitchen is temporarily closed. When opened Bluegrass Kitchen featured a plate dinner and a daily special.

A newer establishment, Starlings Coffee and Provisions serves a breakfast menu with great coffee until 2:30 p.m.

Maybe you might be in the mood for a wholesome fruit smoothie. It's good and it's good for you.
All of these local venues are close to each other on Washington Street and within walking distance of the Capitol Complex.
