They illustrate tricky situations where, magic and fantasy notwithstanding, a greater authenticity of human interaction can be realized. A story that may seem dark, difficult or even ugly to an adult, can be legitimizing to a young learner while offering diverse cultural perspectives, heightened vocabulary, and a springboard for critical thinking and social-emotional development.
