Crypto Debit cards - top choices 2020.

By DimitarM | Welcome to my life | 7 Jan 2020

As you know in our daily life, we are very limited when it comes to places where you can spend your crypto outside of the internet. At this point the only viable way to spend your Bitcoin/Eth for daily tasks is via Debit card that is connected to a Crypto wallet. There are multiple companies worldwide that are offering such a service, but each of them is having such service. Out of those companies there are 3 reputable providers on which I will be focusing this article. At the end of the article I will add a source I found online with more options, but most of them are untested and possibly outdated.

First I want to explain what Crypto Debit card means. Being connected to a crypto wallet charged with certain type of currencies - most often BTC, ETH, XRP, LTC, once you process a payment request the card turns to the provider who exchanges the needed amount of your cryptos for the currency you need to pay your bill and provides the money to the merchant's account or to the ATM you are using.

Which means you are paying several fees every time you are using the card -> Transaction fee, conversion fee, withdrawal fee(very often) and sometimes there is even ATM fee. I am aware this doesn't sound ideal, but this is the situation at the moment.

Additionally in order to charge your card, you need to transfer the funds to a wallet of the provider of the card, which means you no longer hold the Private keys, and we know this is not ideal.

So, lets get started.

The first provider I have in mind is Wirex. They are supplying Visa card available in Multiple European countries. Not all of them.

This map should be pretty close to their coverage. However they are expected to start being available in NA and Asia on a short basis. Currently 4 currencies are available for charging the card - BTC, ETH, LTC and XRP. The card balance can be converted in USD, Euro and GBP.

The company itself got rebranded back in 2016 from E-Coin to Wirex. They are UK regulated company and I would say very reputable. As any other Visa card it is accepted all over the world.

The relatively high fees of the card can be accounted as a drawback. Here you can find the full list of fees.

Coinbase partnered with Paysafe and now they are offering a Visa connected directly to your Coinbase account. The card can be ordered inside the Coinbase mobile app. The card supports all currencies that can be in Coinbase account.

As one of the leading crypto exchanges Coinbase is offering multiple security features on their Visa cards - such as, 2FA, instant asset freeze, etc.

There is a fee of around 5 euro for issuing the card and 1-2% ATM fees. The full list of fees and the FAQ can be found here.

At this point I know the cards are currently being issued in only 6 countries in EU, but I struggled to find out which exactly are those(not sure why exactly this is not clearly stated on their website). The cards are not available in NA or Asia at this point.

Bitpay - is a well known company that is offering crypto debig card services in the only in the USA. From what I can tell they are the most advanced in the way that the clients are not paying any transaction fees, which is something I cannot say about any of the other providers:

Currently the Bitpay card supports several currencies - Bitcoin (BTC), Bitcoin Cash (BCH), Gemini Dollars (GUSD), USD Coin (USDC) and Paxos (PAX).

There is a fee to order the card, about $10 USD. Outside of the US there are fees to be paid and their full list can be found here. It is important to say that Bitpay is pretty well regulated and requires the card issuers to have home address(no P.O. box), an ID and a social security number.

There are number of other companies that offer similar services, but they are more or less not that well known and I cannot vouch for any of them. I personally have used Bitpay and Coinbase so I know  that they can be trusted. About Wirex, I have a close friend that is using their service - back in time I was thinking to either get Revolut or Wirex, but never actually wanted to spend crypto over a card. But hey, not every one is like me.

So here guys you can find that list of debit card issuers, however it looks outdated.

I hope someone of you guys find that information useful.
