The terrifying image of Sadako crawling out of a well in “The Ring” has haunted audiences for years. But did you know this horror icon was inspired by a real ghost story from Japan? The legend of Okiku is just as eerie—and maybe even scarier.
The Legend of Okiku
Okiku was a maid for a wealthy family in ancient Japan. This family owned a precious set of ten Delft plates, and one day, one of these plates went missing. The head of the household, obsessed with Okiku, saw an opportunity. He hid the plate and told Okiku that unless she agreed to be with him, he would accuse her of stealing it—a crime punishable by death.
Trapped and desperate, Okiku chose death over dishonor. She threw herself into a well on the family estate, ending her life in despair. But her torment didn’t end there.

The Haunting
Every night after her death, Okiku’s ghost would rise from the well and begin counting the plates. "One... two... three..." she would whisper, reaching nine before breaking down into heart-wrenching sobs. She could never find the tenth plate, forever trapped in a cycle of grief and frustration.
Locals believed her spirit could only be calmed by shouting "ten!" after she reached nine, tricking her into thinking the set was complete. Only then would her ghost return to the well, silent—for a while.
Sadako's Origins

This tragic story inspired the creation of Sadako Yamamura, the vengeful ghost in The Ring or Ringu. Like Okiku, Sadako’s spirit is tied to a well, and her curse spreads through a mysterious videotape. The chilling image of Sadako, with her long black hair covering her face, is a modern echo of Okiku’s haunting tale.

The Real Well
Okiku’s legend is so deeply rooted in Japan that a well in Himeji Castle is believed to be where her spirit resides. Visitors to the castle have reported hearing strange noises from the well, especially at night—echoes of Okiku’s endless counting.

Okiku’s tragic story lives on through Sadako, a reminder that some spirits can never rest, and their tales continue to haunt us. So, next time you see Sadako crawling from the well, remember: her story began with a real ghost, trapped by grief and betrayal.
