Hello, fellow Publishers :)

Here is the recent version of "Vlad's sociopolitical update" regarding developments worldwide. I now focus on political ideology,  democracy, and energy politics. I am interested in different topics, and if you have a favorite topic, please write to me about it, and I will try to publish it later. Here are some of my recent reads.

Ben Burgis: 50 shades of Marxism

The dialogue around Marxism transcends simple class analysis or the trajectory of capitalism towards socialism, embodying a complex interplay of descriptive and normative dimensions.

The concept is dissected into three main elements: class analysis, scientific socialism, and class emancipation, each serving a distinct purpose in understanding and transforming capitalist societies towards an envisioned state of classlessness and egalitarianism. This framework not only diagnoses societal ills but also prescribes a path toward rectifying them, underscoring Marxism's inherent aim for human freedom and the eradication of class oppression.

This evolving landscape raises questions about the importance of class in addressing societal issues, challenging the notion that class oppression underpins all forms of social injustice. Burgis argues against overarching claims of class dominance, advocating for a more nuanced approach that recognizes the multifaceted nature of oppression, including gender, race, and nationality, without defaulting to class as the fundamental explanatory factor.

Despite these theoretical divergences, the pursuit of class emancipation remains central to Marxist thought, albeit in a context that acknowledges the complexities and intersections of modern social struggles. The book encourages a reevaluation of Marxism's core premises, advocating for a pragmatic approach that embraces the diversity of contemporary social science tools while remaining committed to the emancipatory ideals that have historically defined Marxist theory.

"Reconstructing Marxism" thus serves as a call to critically engage with Marxism's foundational principles, adapt its analytical frameworks to contemporary realities, and reconsider the interplay between its descriptive and normative dimensions in light of the broader struggle for human emancipation across various forms of social oppression.

Discourse Magazine: Decentralised and deliberative democracy

The intersection of rhetoric and abundance extends beyond individual gain, playing a pivotal role in communal prosperity. The core premise is that abundance, defined as maximizing societal benefits for collective flourishing, heavily relies on effective rhetoric. This is because societal benefits are subjective, with varying opinions on what they entail and how best to achieve them. Deliberative rhetoric, a branch focused on the discourse of utility and the means to achieve communal goals, emerges as a crucial skill in navigating these diverse perspectives.

Deliberative rhetoric, rooted in the tradition of Aristotle and emphasizing the pursuit of what is advantageous for the community, is essential in a civil and pluralistic democracy. It's the mechanism through which diverse ideas in the "marketplace of ideas" are debated, intending to reach mutually acceptable conclusions. Political scientists Amy Gutmann and Dennis Thompson highlight its importance in deliberative democracy, where decisions are justified through reasoned arguments that are open to future challenges.

However, cultivating deliberative skills must be more present in secondary and postsecondary education. This gap is partly due to prevailing pedagogies that view certain forms of communication as harmful, stifling the critical scrutiny and debate central to deliberation. The ideological stance that equates scrutiny with attack and the assumption of inherent oppressor-oppressed dynamics in all interactions undermines the very foundation of deliberative discourse.

The argument for integrating deliberative rhetoric into general education is strong. It's about fostering a skill set for civic engagement and empowering individuals and communities to argue for their visions of abundance effectively. Deliberative skills can advance various goals, from adopting business plans to advocating for social justice. They are essential for presenting ideas persuasively, fostering collaboration, and navigating disagreements.

A framework for enhancing these skills could draw from the "Framework for Success in Postsecondary Writing," which emphasizes habits of mind such as curiosity, openness, engagement, and metacognition. These qualities are not only conducive to developing deliberative skills. Still, they are also enhanced by them, creating a virtuous cycle of learning and application.

Pursuing abundance through deliberative rhetoric is a compelling argument for its emphasis on education. It's about equipping individuals and communities to articulate, debate, and implement ideas that lead to societal flourishing. The ability to engage in deliberative discourse is fundamental to a thriving democracy and the realization of communal goals, underscoring the need for a renewed focus on rhetorical education.

Persuasion: Germany, energy and the far-right

In a significant month of protests and policy revelations, Germany was at the crossroads of two critical issues. On the one hand, hundreds of thousands took to the streets to protest against the far-right Alternative für Deutschland. This party is gaining traction with almost a quarter of the electorate. On the other, Germany proudly announced a record reduction in carbon emissions from its electricity sector by 21%, achieving the lowest levels since the 1950s.

This achievement, part of the "Energiewende" policy aimed at transitioning to cleaner energy sources, juxtaposes oddly with the country's overall decrease in electricity generation by 11.5% in 2023, marking a 19% fall since 2017. This decline in generation, particularly following the shutdown of eight nuclear power plants, raises concerns about the efficacy and impact of Germany's energy policies.

The situation is further complicated by the stagnation in renewable energy growth post-pandemic and the reluctance to import cleaner, nuclear-generated electricity from France. The consequences of these energy decisions have been felt most acutely by the industrial sector, once the backbone of Germany's manufacturing prowess, leading to significant facility closures. This shift affects local employment and economic stability. It contributes to global atmospheric pollution as production moves to countries with higher carbon footprints.

Moreover, the connection between the rise of the far-right and the government's energy policies cannot be ignored. The technical and logistical challenges of massively scaling wind and solar energy, coupled with the phased-out nuclear and hydroelectric options, have left Germany more reliant on fossil fuels, contradicting the goals of the Energiewende. This reliance has sparked political and social ramifications, including protests and a reevaluation of energy strategies, especially in the wake of Germany reactivating coal mines for energy needs.

The broader implications of these policies paint a grim picture for Germany's economy and environmental goals. Despite intentions for a cleaner energy transition, Germany's emissions per kWh remain significantly higher than those of its European neighbors. The country's struggle with its energy policies, influenced by historical decisions and recent geopolitical events, underscores the complex dynamics. These challenges impact Germany's environmental credentials, economic performance, and social cohesion, suggesting a need for a more balanced and pragmatic approach to its energy and environmental strategies.
