The Covid inquiry has begun with a focus on WhatsApp messages. Still, it is essential not to lose sight of the more critical questions surrounding the unprecedented experiment in public health during the pandemic.
A study by the Institute of Economic Affairs suggests that lockdowns were a global policy failure, as they did not significantly reduce deaths while imposing substantial social, cultural, and economic costs.
Based on a meta-analysis of 22 studies, the research indicates that stringent lockdown measures prevented only 1,700 deaths in England and Wales, contrasting with earlier predictions of saving hundreds of thousands of lives. The authors highlight the role of voluntary behavior changes, such as social distancing, in mitigating the virus's spread, while harsher lockdown restrictions had negligible effects on mortality rates.
The high costs of lockdowns, including business closures, financial distress, and increased public debt, are still being felt today. The report calls for caution in sacrificing fundamental freedoms in future public health crises.
