A study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence reveals that the legalization of adult-use marijuana is linked to reduced incidents between police and young individuals. Researchers from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto examined police-reported incident data before and after the implementation of cannabis legalization in Canada.
The study found significant decreases in cannabis-related offenses reported by police for youths aged 12 to 17 following legalization. This reduction in criminal interactions between police and young people is estimated to be around 21,000 incidents since nationwide legalization.
The study's authors concluded that the Cannabis Act has led to sustained and substantial decreases in youth cannabis-related criminal incidents, which represents a significant benefit in terms of social and individual harm for young individuals.
