The Hidden Infrastructure Behind Online Shopping

The Hidden Infrastructure Behind Online Shopping

When we purchase something via the Internet, the procedure seems to be very simple. First, we just launch the application, then select the item, pay for it and wait for the delivery. However, many systems should work in coordination in order for our order to be successfully delivered to us.

First of all, the platform has to check whether the product is available. Products are stored in warehouses and are accounted for using inventory management systems which help companies manage the number of items in stock. Once the order is completed, the product is located, packed and prepared for delivery either by people or by the automation systems.

Paying for a product is also done using some technologies behind the scenes. In particular, payment gateways are the platforms which help Internet shops accept online payments from clients.

The package goes through the delivery network. It can even go to sorting centers where the packages are sorted depending on their next destination point. The product has started its route, which we will not see.

It is not enough just to deliver a package from the warehouse to the customer's house. Logistics networks organize warehouses, transportation, sorting and local delivery hubs. Each of them performs a unique function in the process of delivering goods.

This complex process can be managed using technology. Tracking system shows information regarding the status of shipment, and the route-planning software may help with choosing a proper route. Some companies apply artificial intelligence to solve the problems of inventory and delivery.

One of the most critical elements of the delivery process is reverse logistics. In case the item is eligible for return, it will be delivered back through the delivery network for inspection, processing, or returning to inventory.

All this process requires people, infrastructure, fleet, IT solutions, and networks of communication. Any problem in any part of the process may affect the delivery process as a whole.

E-commerce may require just some clicks, but delivery requires a whole physical and informational network. App is only a visible element of the process, and the actual work is done behind the screen.
