One Senate Vote Undid Bitcoin's Whole Week

I had the Senate vote tracker open in one tab and my portfolio open in the other, and I watched both fall apart within minutes of each other. The CLARITY Act failed its Senate vote Tuesday, and Bitcoin sank as much as 2.44% in a matter of hours, sliding from near $76,800 down to under $74,900 before clawing back part of the loss. I'd been watching that bill for weeks as the thing that might finally give crypto a clear federal rulebook. Watching it die and drag price down with it in real time hit different than reading about it after the fact.

Run the math on that drop yourself: $76,800 minus $74,900 is $1,900, and $1,900 divided by $76,800 comes out to about 2.47%, close enough to the reported 2.44% that I stopped questioning the number. Bitcoin settled at $75,841, down 1.49% over 24 hours, while trading volume jumped 30.32% as the selling worked its way through the order books. That volume spike is the tell. This wasn't a quiet drift lower, it was real money exiting fast the moment the vote result hit the wires.

A single vote in Washington moved more money in an hour than most earnings reports move in a week.

From 50% to 89% in a Few Weeks, the Fed Odds Nobody Saw Coming

Here's what made Tuesday's drop worse instead of better: the very next day, the Fed meeting opened with Polymarket pricing a 25-basis-point hike at roughly 89%, up sharply from near 50% just weeks earlier.

Do the jump yourself: going from 50% to 89% is a 39 percentage point swing in a matter of weeks, driven by hot inflation data and increasingly hawkish Fed commentary. That's not a market drifting toward consensus, that's a market getting blindsided by incoming data and repricing hard, fast, and all at once.

$79.83 Million in Liquidations, Up 122% in a Single Day

Leveraged traders paid for being on the wrong side of both stories at once. Bitcoin liquidations jumped 122.47% in a day to $79.83 million as overleveraged longs got forced out.

Meanwhile the funding rate, while still positive, dropped 31.62%, meaning even the traders who survived were paying less to stay long than they had been, a sign that conviction was already fading before the liquidations even hit. Two catalysts landing back to back, a failed vote and a repricing Fed, is exactly the kind of stretch that turns ordinary leverage into forced selling.

$75,000 or $79,568, the Two Numbers Deciding Everything Right Now

Bitcoin had touched an intraday high of $79,568 earlier in the week before all of this started, and by Wednesday it was trading near $76,022, down 1.17%. Analysts are now watching two outcomes specifically: a Fed hike could send Bitcoin tumbling below $75,000, while a pause would likely ease the selling pressure and support a rebound back toward that $79,568 level it already proved it could reach. Former Fed governor Stephen Miran actually argued against hiking at all this week, pointing out the contradiction in turning hawkish just as inflation data cools. Whether that argument wins the room matters more to Bitcoin right now than almost anything happening on-chain.

Two Storylines, One Bad Week, Zero Coincidence

I keep thinking about how these two events landed on top of each other instead of weeks apart. A failed regulatory vote removes hope for clarity. A Fed repricing removes hope for easy money. Both hit the same asset in the same 48-hour window, and the market didn't have time to recover from one before absorbing the other. That's not bad luck, that's just what happens when politics and monetary policy decide to collide on the same calendar week.

Thanks for reading this one all the way through.

if a single failed Senate vote can erase a week of gains in an hour, how much of your trading plan actually accounts for Washington instead of just the charts?
