You Can't Offend Without Permission

You Can't Offend Without Permission

By Deejo | Thinking-Out-Loud | 27 Mar 2021

People seem to be too concerned about offending others. It’s been my experience that one can only be offended if they choose to be. There was a time someone called me a racial slur. I just laughed it off without a second thought. Therefore, they were not able to offend me.

Those that are being offended are offended because they are allowing it. Even though I wouldn't encourage deliberately offending others, our focus would be better served not on being "politically correct" but instead, having honest debates that deal with facts (not name-calling). Having productive conversations can help each person to understand the other person's view.

Based on things I've observed the last few years, many who are offended, want to be offended. They go out of their way to find offense, because in finding offense they have an excuse to attack others. These people do not care about facts, truth, or logic. Walking around "on eggshells" does not solve these problems.

I've seen people apologize because others were offended even though they did nothing wrong. After multiple apologies, they continued to receive attacks. This just proves the point that they just want to attack. Why do we worry so much about offending others if we are not saying anything wrong? They certainly don't care about offending you or me.

Again, I’m not saying we should try to offend someone. But at the same time being so focused on not-offending keeps us from having intelligent conversations and good honest debates and doesn't stop their offense or their attacks.
