Does Bernie Have it Right?

Some people want our nation to become a socialist nation, while others want a society where there is a thing called "private property". I saw a video that performed an experiment to find out which is better. This video also talks about the pilgrim's experiences and how they changed and were then able to prosper.

You can also watch it on Odysee with this link:  This Thanksgiving, Say Thank You to....

It's just over four minutes and would encourage you to watch it.

John Stossel set up an area that represented the farming land. He tossed some fake coins that he said represented a dollar. The rule was that for each minute it remained the coins would double in value. When he said "go" they all reached in a grabbed as many as they could.

Then Stossel took the same area and divided it up for each person. Then he told them that they could only take coins from their property. But again the coins would double in value for each minute they remained. Then he said "go" and they all just sat there.

When asked why they waited the response was "I want to reap the most benefit".

The conclusion is that when each person is in charge of their own property they do what would reap the most benefit. I believe that is what they did on the communal property as well, but the most benefit was to take what they could before someone else took it.

This communal farming idea was recommended to the pilgrims when they set off for the new land. They tried it in the beginning but too many people were starving. After that colossal failure Governor William Bradford assigned each family a parcel of land and then they had more than enough food. The video also explained another reason why the communal farming didn't work for the pilgrims is that some took advantage and chose not to do any work.

I agree that when people are unable to do for themselves, then it is good for others to help them out. Notice here I did not say the government should help them. When the government gets involved it is always to the detriment of the people, especially those who are being "helped". The welfare system we have here in the United States is a great example of how bad it is for everyone (not just the taxpayer). The system is set up in such a way that it is near impossible to get ahead and the welfare recipients are unable to get out of poverty. This creates dependency on the government (a way to buy votes).

The next time someone tries to convince you that socialism is the way to go, remember this experiment and don't be fooled.

Thank you for reading and Happy Thanksgiving.
