After spending years acting as the ship's captain in the original 1960s Star Trek series, William Shatner will actually be heading to space this month. It won’t quite be as far as he went in the show, but farther than he (or any TV captain) has gone before (in real life).
October 12th, not only will he be the first Star Trek captain to actually go to space, but at 90 years old, he will also be the oldest person to make the journey. The flight will only last about 10 minutes and go about 62 miles above the earth. He will be riding on “Blue Origin” founded by Amazon founder, Jeff Bezos. Other passengers include a former Nasa engineer and a Blue Origin employee.
On a not as different note, according to theguardian.com, there have been allegations against Blue Origin for sexual harassment and that speed was the priority over safety. IF these allegations are true, I would be VERY nervous about the lack of concern for safety. I am not so sure I would want to fly in something that was built so hastily.
When I searched the web on Blue Origin, every article that I found about the allegations had "sexual harassment" in the title. But then went on to mention as a side note the concern for safety. Sexual harassment should never be tolerated, but isn't safety for a rocket ship the elephant in the room? Anyway, I hope all of those allegations get investigated and dealt with appropriately.
And to Captain Kirk and the other passengers... I really hope you have a safe and enjoyable flight.
