I thought I would share my reasoning behind cutting the number of people I follow from 122 to 66. On the off chance, you would find it interesting. =)
Pruning the list of people you follow
This can be a bit of an ironic post. Considering I just had a giveaway celebrating my 500 followers. And now I am writing a post about how I have pruned the authors I follow myself. But hopefully, it will make sense after you have read it all.
This was actually spurred on by a comment on a post a few days back. And it has been marinating in my mind ever sins. And yesterday I decided to finally pull the trigger and do it. Before the pruning, I followed 122 people, and now after the pruning. This number is reduced to 66.
Who did I prune?
The people I unfollowed fell into two categories. The first one was people who are not posting any content. The reason for me to unfollow them where simple, they produce no content so there is no need for me to follow the, They get no benefits from followers. Me unfollowing does not hurt them in any way. Well, maybe a little bruised ego. But other than that I see no hard in it.
And you might ask why I followed them in the first place. Well, when I started out. I followed everyone who followed me. And a sort of thank you. But after I passed about 30-40 followers I decided to stop it. Because I realized it quickly got out of hand.
The second category of people is people who have posted content. But they are inactive and have not posted anything in a while. And similarly, this decision came fairly easy to me as well. Because if they are not posting content, then there is no reason for me to follow them. I did however have a handful of exceptions, people whose content I really liked. And on the off chance they start posting again I want to be able to see it.
Why did I decide to prune?
As I said the list of people I followed was growing very rapidly. And 122 people are starting to become annoying if I want to go through the list. It is a lot of loading and scrolling. So in a sense, it was a bot of housecleaning if you will. Out with the old, to make room for the new.
The second reason can be considered a bit vain. That is if someone, new mostly, checks my info to see who I follow. I want them to be able to find content I myself think is good. So following people who post no content or are inactive. That does not really match that.
Those are the main reason for me to run the number of people I follow. Do you regularly prune the people you follow, if so what criteria do you go by then? Or do you simply have a more strict criteria for who you follow in the first place? Please share in the comment section down below.
If you would like to support me and the content I make, please consider following me, reading my other posts, or why not do both instead.
See you on the interwebs!
