Why Do We Keep Playing… Even When We Have No Time?

Because sometimes, saving a virtual world is the only thing saving us from the real one.

Tonight, I finished work at 8:17 p.m.
Got home. Ate. Cleaned the dishes. Answered two “urgent” emails. Hugged my dog. Read a chapter of that book I’ve been trying to finish for three months…
And at 11:48 p.m., while my partner was already softly snoring, I was deep into a boss fight in Elden Ring.
Eyes burning.
Coffee cold.
Soul running on “just one more level.”
And no, I’m not alone.

The “Just 10 Minutes” Ritual

I bet this has happened to you:
You say: “I’ll just play for 10 minutes before bed.”
You boot up the game.
Enter a dungeon.
Defeat one enemy.
Unlock an achievement.
And suddenly, the clock hits 2:00 a.m. like the universe glitched.
But it’s not addiction.
It’s not laziness.
It’s survival.
Because in those stolen moments from exhaustion, from work, from routine…
We remember what it feels like to be the main character.
In real life, we don’t get to choose much:
— What time to wake up.
— Which bills to pay.
— What to say in that never-ending family WhatsApp group.
But in the game…
— I choose to attack or block.
— I pick my armor.
— I save the kingdom, rescue the friend, uncover the secret.
And even if it’s fake, I know my choices matter.

The Game I’ll Never Finish (Because I’m Afraid It’ll End)

I have a save file in The Last of Us Part II.
Two chapters from the end.
It’s been there for eight months.
It’s not that I don’t want to finish it.
It’s that I don’t want it to be over.
Because when it ends, Ellie won’t be there.
I won’t walk through those ruined forests again.
I won’t feel that mix of grief and hope that only the best games can give you.
It’s like finishing a show you loved and just staring at the black screen, wondering:
“What now?”
Video games are shelters.
Not escapism.
Sanctuary.

Why Do We Keep Playing?

Because:
In Ravenquest, I can grow potatoes without my boss yelling at me.
In Animal Crossing, my neighbors never cancel me online.
In Celeste, climbing a mountain is hard… but possible.
In Disco Elysium, I can fail a thousand times — and still keep going.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what we need to remember:
We can keep going.
It’s Not Wasting Time. It’s Getting It Back.
Sure, I don’t have time.
Nobody does.
But when I play, time stops being the enemy.
I stop thinking about what I didn’t do.
Stop worrying about what’s coming.
I’m just… here. Jumping. Shooting. Exploring. Breathing.
And even if it’s just for 10 minutes,
I feel like myself again.
So yes, I keep playing even when I have no time.
Because deep down,
video games don’t steal time… they give it back.
