By S1DARTA0 | The Philosophy about Art | 25 Feb 2023

Have you ever heard of the concept of inscription on Bitcoin? It refers to a special kind of transaction that allows for the embedding of messages or data within the Bitcoin blockchain. As an artist, I was immediately drawn to this technology and its potential for creating hidden messages and digital art. It reminded me of the ancient inscriptions of the past, with their intricate details and hidden meanings.

In this article, i will try to explore the concept of inscription on Bitcoin and its unique features and capabilities. We'll discuss how it works and its potential uses, from secure messaging to digital asset transfer. Additionally, as an artist who has been inspired by inscriptions throughout history, I'll share how this technology has rekindled my fascination for the beauty and power of inscriptions.

So if you're curious about the world of inscription on Bitcoin and how it can be used, join me on this journey of discovery. By the end of this article, you'll have a better understanding of this fascinating technology and its potential for the future. / Sid, 2023.

Bitcoin is a decentralized digital currency that has been around since 2009. Most people are familiar with the basics of Bitcoin, but did you know that it is possible to embed a message or data within the Bitcoin blockchain? This is known as an inscription on Bitcoin, and it's a special kind of transaction that can have interesting uses.

An inscription transaction involves counting the satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) within the transaction using a method called ordinal theory. The first satoshi in the transaction is considered to be the "inscribed satoshi." For example, if an inscription transaction contains 100 satoshis, the first satoshi in the transaction would be considered the "inscribed satoshi."

Using certain wallets, it's possible to send inscribed satoshis using regular satoshis as the transaction fee. This means that you don't need to use the inscribed satoshis themselves to pay for the transaction fee. Alternatively, with the Sparrow wallet, you can use some of the inscribed satoshis themselves to cover the fee.

Inscription on Bitcoin is a process of embedding a message or data within the Bitcoin blockchain. This is achieved by including an inscription transaction within the blockchain, which can have interesting uses beyond simple monetary transfers.

One potential use of inscription on Bitcoin is for secure messaging. Since the blockchain is a decentralized and immutable ledger, messages inscribed within it are virtually impossible to alter or delete. This makes it an ideal platform for secure and censorship-resistant messaging.

Another use of inscription on Bitcoin is for digital asset transfer. By inscribing information about a digital asset within the blockchain, such as an NFT, ownership and provenance can be securely recorded and tracked. This adds an extra layer of trust and authenticity to digital assets, which is especially important in the world of digital art and collectibles.

Recently, an artwork (created by me) called "Georgie" was inscribed on the Bitcoin blockchain as inscription #526. The buyer of the artwork did the inscription on bitcoin themselves, using a wallet like the ones described above. Georgie is an acrylic painting and an NFT (non-fungible token) that was minted by me on the platform OpenSea, and then sold to the buyer who inscribed it on-chain (Bitcoin).

The artwork itself carries a message about the separation of the state from the people. The inscribed message within the blockchain adds an extra layer of uniqueness and authenticity to the artwork, making it even more valuable.

Inscription on Bitcoin offers a unique and secure way to embed messages and data within the blockchain, with potential uses ranging from secure messaging to digital asset transfer. As more people explore the possibilities of this technology, we can expect to see even more creative and innovative applications emerge. And just like the ancient inscriptions of the past, inscription on Bitcoin adds a new layer of permanence and security to the act of leaving a mark or conveying a message.
