Scary Youtube channels I follow

By nanoflowerdemon | The Nanocave | 3 Jun 2020

I was never a fan of the classic horror. The Jasons and Freddy Krugers and such never really appealed to me. Though I do have a curiosity for mysteries, true crime stories and creepy media. Stories about mysterious disappearances, alien abductions, secret societies, strange video games and social media accounts and channels, unsolved crimes etc. These things often peak my interest. The thrill of a good mystery, the rush of being freaked out or just morbid curiosity. I don't know what it is but every now and then I like to delve into the creepier side of Youtube.

There are many channels covering creepy topics but sadly, a lot of them end up boring you really quickly. Keeping someone's attention through a long story is an art form in itself. Here are three channels that I feel do an excellent job of conveying a scary story with their own personal touch that makes you want to know more about the creators rather than just being a voice reading text. Be warned, these channels often cover really unsettling real life topics and definitely are not for the faint of heart.

1. Nexpo

Short for Nightmare Expo. Nexpo covers topics mostly centered around creepy internet mysteries. Weird Reddit stories, ARGs, strange and obscure video games, creepy videos and recordings that usually come with no explanation. Nexpo presents these in his very soft, presenter-like voice and tries to make sense of these by putting forward his own theories to what is actually going on. His upload schedule is 1 to 2 videos a month and these days they range from 20 minutes to an hour. If you're looking to get spooked without any jumpscares (none of the people on this list have any jumpscares) then Nexpo is an excellent choice.

2. ReignBot

ReignBot makes similar content to Nexpo. The videos are much shorter though, ranging from 10 to 30 minutes. She also explores online mysteries, ARGs, true crime and such. She does this with more of an explanatory tone often giving answers exactly what is going on. She is critical of what she presents and if she believes that the subject being talked about is not worth being spooked over, she will say it. For example stating that dark web mystery boxes are mostly just yard sale trash. You might not be interested in this, but she also has a talent when it comes to presenting sponsored products. Usually with youtubers, I look for where the sponsored bit ends but I can easily listen to ReignBot talking about Dollar shave club or whatever. Her personal touch with a dash of humor is what sets her apart from Nexpo.

3. Lazy Masquerade

Lazy Masquerade is probably the channel that got me into this genre of youtube videos. He delves into topics like true crime, disappearances, scary stories that are themed around different situations, for example scary phone calls, weird photographs, true scary hotel stories and such. Lazy presents these in a more narrative style rather than investigative like Nexpo or ReignBot. It's kind of like listening to audiobooks. Lazy does an excellent job of creating an atmosphere and really sucking you into the story. His videos are usually about 30 minutes long and those 30 minutes feel like they pass a lot faster because you don't really find yourself checking the time. They are great for just listening while doing some work. Meaning they don't require your full attention. You can jut relax, do your work and enjoy.

There are a lot more channels that cover similar topics but these three are the ones I keep coming back to. Great voices with good production quality, covering mysterious and spooky topics. If you like the spook, definitely check these creators out.
