Now that I'm just under half a year back in Australia... I have this urge and desire to start my own little Early Music ensemble. Partly to keep myself sane with a pet project, and partly to infect as many of the younger generation of musicians and audiences with my particular strain of Early Music. It is sort of hard to do that when you are always playing under someone else's vision... but starting a group is hard.
I am a musician, and I severely lack the experience and skills for forming and growing a group... especially from the business, marketing, and infrastructure side of things. It is daunting... but I'm starting. I have no doubt that I will make mistakes and all of that... but I guessthe only way to learn is to make the mistakes, and then pick-up and go forward with the additional experience. However... I do realise that I shouldn't start everything completely from scratch... and so, I am asking around to get some insights from other people who have done similar things. How they did stuff, how they set up the infrastructure and all those things that are completely alien to me...
Meanwhile, I do also need to start planning out the music side of things as well. I need to see how I grow the group... you always face this tension of not having enough money at the start to get the people that are willing to play (due to travel/accommodation expenses...)... but you also need to be loyal to those who helped out when money was near non-existent! The trick I guess is to grow slowly and surely... rather than locking in too many people with expectations that might be problematic.
I wish it was just playing... that would make things so much easier. That is what I'm more comfortable doing. And maybe if this thing grows and takes hold, then there would be someone who could help me with all of that... but for the meantime, I'm going to have to try and learn to be a jack of all trades. First things... set up a digital presence, at least as a calling card.... and then get some concerts scheduled.
I have many players that are keen to play with me... but I'm not able to cover their expenses at the moment, and I feel awkward to ask people to play if I can't at least do that. Even if they say that it is okay...
Currently, I have a single solo concert that I have already performed and recorded... and I do have another one planned together with my wife. So, that will be two concerts as a start for this first year back in Australia. Slowly, we will try to grow it out... then, at some point, I'm hoping that we will have a little loyal audience following... and the possibility to apply for funding?
... but at the start, keeping it lean and mean. Then seeking additional concerts around the place... which would also give enough funding to start bringing in some of the people who I really want in place!
But... a long term plan. First things first... infrastructure! Everything looks impossible at the moment... but I want to try, and like all difficult and impossible things, you just have to take that first step.
