Living in Sydney can be quite a vastly different and varied experience depending on where you live... and where you live will have a great deal to do with your historical and/or current wealth. The Eastern suburbs are home to some of the most beautiful and wealthy suburbs in Sydney, and it is quite a stark contrast to where I used to live when I actually lived here.
The people here are surrounded by the beautiful sights of the harbour, often seen from the insides of their quite beautiful houses that overlook the water. When people visit, this is the idea of Sydney that they are most exposed to... and it is quite amazing, if you are lucky enough to live here.
I find myself often having rehearsals in these areas, as the incredibly wealthy private schools here have astounding music departments with equally incredible facilities.. rehearsal rooms, private practice rooms, and even concert and recital halls. Nothing speaks more to the inequality of society than some of these schools.... and the contrast to what little is left over for public schools.
Anyway, this isn't supposed to be a rant about the inequalities of society. This is a bit of an introduction to one of the more beautiful suburbs of Sydney, Rose Bay.
You can easily arrive to Rose Bay by bus... but when I'm in Sydney, and the weather is good, I prefer to take the slightly more expensive but less packed ferry. Rose Bay Wharf is just a single stop from Circular Quay... and a long walk uphill to my rehearsal venue. However, I'm more than happy about the longer walk... in exchange for the pleasant ride on the water!
So yes, this is the sort of place where you have a local yacht club.. as you do...
... and nice large parks... I find it a bit difficult to feel like the people in this suburb belong to a very different Australia from what I am accustomed to. This is the upper crust, and the way that they speak, walk, and behave is a bit alien to me!
... nothing speaks more to the difference in what I perceive in society than a drive-in dog-wash! Seriously, there is a facility at the end of this road which handles the washes for pets whilst the owners sit in the car and wait. Ah well, we must have work for the servants...
Looking out towards the ocean, and the harbour mouth, I start to wonder about how many boats there are... it appears that there would be at least enough for half the families here! I guess that you would be the odd one out if you DIDN'T have a boat!
Just the view down an alley is quite astounding already. You can see the Sydney Harbour Bridge from here.. I bet that this would be quite a popular spot to see the New Year's Fireworks! I did see that one of these little one bedroom flats sold recently... I hesitate to look, it must have cost a fair bit!
...but if you live in this area, well... you probably want one of these places instead!
... and if you really want to stand out from the crowd, screw having a yacht! Get yourself a seaplane!
