Sigh... this is an ongoing project that has been half finished for quite a long time now. Just tracking and cataloging all the coins and precious metals that I've managed to add to my little hoard over the past years. Now, it is probably a good idea to log and photograph them as soon as they come into my grubby little hands... but that is definitely NOT the fun part!
... so, what happens is that they arrive, I stash them away in a seperate drawer for the time when I will have time to catalog and photograph them in a big bunch. Of course, what happens after that is that I put it off... until the pile is too big, and then I put it off because the pile is too big!
Haha... when, now that we have resolved to move back to Australia, it is time to finish this project of sorting and logging everything, as it will be a pain in the arse to do when everything is being packed away. Needless to say, if everything isn't neatly and securely stowed...well, that is just asking for trouble with missing things!
At least if I start organising it all now, I will know what I'm actually supposed to have!... and it is good deal more than I had expected! A pretty nice surprise!
In the end, I settled on a system where I should be able to find the photos of each coin/piece easily enough. A naming and filing system that has space for up to 9999 units in each of the categories of Coins, Copper, Silver, Gold, Tokens. I'm nowhere near that limit... but it is a good idea to have that redundancy built in!
The photos are coupled with an Excel spreadsheet that houses all the details of each coin. Price bought, silver content, dates and numista listing if there is one. It has been quite a bit of work... but I'm glad to have finished it today... there are still a few loose pieces here and there, but the bulk of it has been done! It only took the better part of a few years (not constant...) to conceive of the idea and put it into action. Of course, that was always complicated by the influx of new coins...
It has been nice to revisit old purchases, and some forgotten shinies as well. I will definitely try to share a few more of them in the coming months.... but there are just so many to choose from. That said, there are only a few that are really special, there are many of the silver content coins that aren't that special... aka, no pretty designs or pictures!
However, I had a disturbing hole of a number of silver coins (silver content coins, not pure silver thankfully...). They had been logged, labelled and photographed... but I can't for the life of me find their physical forms. They may have fallen down the back of my drawers or desk, so I expect that they will resurface at some point. Likely when we are packing everything up for the big move... a pity though, they were some really nice old Venezuelan coins and I don't have many of those now!
... now to check to see if I have to pay import tax on these things. They should still fall under the "personal possessions" exemptions as far as I understand, but it is always a good idea to be sure!
