Deregistering a Business in Australia

Phew, that was a good deal less painful than I had expected!

I had a really really really old business registration from a music ensemble that I had helped set up a really long time ago.... when I was student, and when I was last living in Australia... so, almost two decades ago! At that time, I was young (and so were my co-collaborators), and I didn't really know what was going on... only that we needed to register a company and an ABN. So... we did.

A few years afterwards, I left the country to pursue work and study overseas... and I left everything in the hands of my fellow students. I had thought that they would either transfer ownership and details, or just wind everything up. Unfortunately, we were all students... and neither of those things happened, and the group disbanded but all the infrastructure was still in place.

Fast forward to this moment... and I had noticed that the company was still listed as "active" and I was getting emails about COVID help for businesses and all of that. Sigh... I guess that nothing was ever done to wind everything up formally!

Given the age of the registration... before Australia constructed it's digital government infrastructure (which is pretty horrifically bad!... and don't get me started on the commercial offerings which are EQUALLY TERRIBLE!). It meant that I had to brave the phone system... I've had to deal with the Australian phone systems before for government services... and you essentially need to have at least a couple of hours set aside for the waiting time.... during which, you hopefully don't get hung up on in the waiting period... or after the call is answered! I guess that is where people in power decided that it would be a good idea to cut expenses... in the actual public facing infrastructure! Yay for "free-market" ideas corrupting areas where they shouldn't have sway...

Anyway, I was on the hold line for nearly an hour... which was a good deal shorter than some of the lines that I've waited in! And then there was the problem of verifying myself. Remember, all of this was done nearly 20 years ago... and I don't have any solid records from that time!

However, once they got me identified... through a series of 20 questions... it was established that I was the person that had set up the business, and from there it was a quick step to deregister it! YAY... that was much less painful than I was expecting... but it still did take up the better part of two hours!

Now... off to start the registration process for a new ensemble! I'm hatching plans to start a little period instrument group in Australia. Just getting the nitty gritty out of the way... all the not fun stuff, like building a website, business stuff, bank stuff... all of that before I can just enjoy the real stuff, playing music!

Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life! I'm a Violinist and doing what I love is often interestingly contrasted with the reality of getting to do what I love...
