During the month of March, a bizarre incident occurred at one of the eyeball-scanning stations owned by Worldcoin in Berlin. A fight involving ten individuals broke out.
An exchange of blows took place between Chechen nationals, refugees, and security personnel, resulting in one of the guards receiving a bleeding nose.
According to three individuals who have firsthand knowledge of the occurrences, this was only one of numerous fights that took place at Worldcoin locations in the German capital during the spring of this year. When volunteers were waiting in line to have their irises scanned in return for free cryptocurrency, fighting broke out.
"There were fights on occasion, and the police were called," claimed Daniel, an employee at a high-end clothes shop that is located next to one of the Worldcoin stations.
According to the individuals, many of the people who willingly signed up for Worldcoin were not crypto aficionados; rather, they were people who were homeless, refugees, or drug addicts who were paid by suspicious parties to be scanned and then hand over their respective cryptocurrency awards.
Each and every Worldcoin volunteer at the time got around one hundred dollars' worth of the company's cryptocurrency, which is referred to as WLD.
According to an investigation conducted by DL News, at least one organization in Berlin that recruited these individuals may have made approximately 700,000 tokens between the months of March and April, which was the time when the token was at its highest point.
A formal response was not made by officials of Worldcoin about the clashes that took place at its locations in Berlin.
According to DL News, a spokeswoman for the Worldcoin Foundation said that the organization "has a number of fraud prevention measures in place, conducts investigations into claims regarding potential fraudulent behavior, and takes corrective action as appropriate."
Worldcoin, a cryptocurrency firm that was co-founded by Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has been mired in controversy ever since it began scanning people's eyes as part of an online identification initiative.
According to an individual who is acquainted with the strategy, Worldcoin made an effort in the spring to prevent what it referred to as "undesirable" sign-ups, who were individuals who were unaware of the company's operations or the realm of cryptocurrencies.
Worldcoin managers gave the workers the instruction to question sign-ups about the reason they were having their eyeballs scanned, and if the sign-ups did not offer a response that was sufficient, they were to be denied.
A sizable throng started congregating around the orb scanning station at Hackesche Hofe, a posh retail arcade located in the heart of Berlin, on a consistent basis throughout the month of March.
As it turned out, the value of the Worldcoin token, WLD, had increased by a factor of five in the last month as a result of public interest in the initiative.
Worldcoin's team got to know the gang, and they revealed that they were from Chechnya, which is a region of Russia that is now experiencing a conflict. They exhibited rude behavior.
"There were a few instances in which I was subjected to physical threats and yelled at in my face," said one individual who had dealt with them.
As the Worldcoin crew began interviewing potential sign-ups, tensions began to rise. According to the individuals cited by DL News, they had a gut feeling that the Chechens were trying to coerce migrants into signing up for a scan and the cryptocurrency prize.
The Chechens refused to leave, and all of a sudden, punches were traded between them. This occurred after they denied three migrants the opportunity to be inspected. While the courtyards of the shopping center were filled with shouts, one of the antagonists tossed a blackboard menu from a café into the air.
