Gary Wang, FTX fraudster, avoids jail time

Gary Wang, the final FTX executive condemned, will not spend time for helping prosecutors decipher Sam Bankman-Fried's fraud.

Two years after FTX fell, U.S. Senior Judge Lewis A. Kaplan of District Court for the Southern District of New York released Wang from prison.

Wang was the first Bankman-Fried deputies to contact authorities in 2022, prosecutors said. Wang pled guilty to fraud in December, weeks after SBF's exchange fell.

Judge Kaplan said Wang's collaboration was exceptional and that he had never seen such help from an insider, reported Inner City Press.

Before building two crypto titans, Gary Wang and Sam Bankman-Fried were buddies at a high school math camp. Wang wrote programming for Alameda Research's trading operations and became FTX's CTO.

Wang questioned various Bankman-Fried choices at both firms. The federal prosecutors cited various witness statements that SBF regularly rejected options notwithstanding Wang's misgivings.

FTX's co-founder helped federal investigators find mixed assets and embezzled money in Bankman-Fried's enterprises. Wang testified at the SBF fraud trial and revealed Alameda Research's unlawful privileges at consumer cost.

Despite Bankman-Fried's conviction for fraud and appeal of his 25-year sentence, his friends all accepted plea offers for shorter sentences. Former Alameda co-CEO Caroline Ellison received a two-year sentence in September.

Ryan Salame, ex-FTX digital Market co-CEO, began his 7.5-year term last month. Like Wang, former FTX engineering head Nishad Singh got no jail time and three years of supervised release.
