FBI created a cryptocurrency so it could watch it being abused

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) developed its own cryptocurrency in order to monitor the activities of individuals suspected of engaging in fraudulent activity. This strategy proved to be so successful that it resulted in arrests in three different nations.

An statement made by the Department of Justice on Wednesday revealed that eighteen persons have been charged "for widespread fraud and manipulation in the cryptocurrency markets." The news also revealed that the Federal Reserve's currency, which is an Ethereum-based instrument called NexFundAI, was included in the announcement.

"Wash trades" are transactions that are carried out primarily for the purpose of increasing the number of trades occurring in a security or other asset, according to the allegations made by the Federal Reserve. It is common practice to interpret an increase in the number of transactions as a sign that a stock is becoming more appealing due to the fact that it has promising growth potential. This is a signal that may cause prices to climb. On the other hand, wash transactions are often carried out by linked businesses, or even the same firm, in order to provide a misleading market signal. This business structure is sometimes referred to as "pump and dump."

The United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said that the claimed schemes are "intended to induce investor victims to purchase the crypto assets by creating the false appearance of an active trading market for them." In other words, the SEC stated that the schemes are.

It doesn't matter what you label this activity; individuals who engage in it have the expectation that the price of an item will increase above what they paid for it. Following that, they make a profit by selling their own assets.

Saitama, which is one of the organizations involved in this scenario, developed its very own tokens. The management of the company "allegedly made a variety of false public statements, including that Saitama's business plan had been reviewed by regulators, that its leadership was not selling the Saitama tokens they owned, and that the Saitama token was coded in a way that prevented market manipulation."

But the paperwork accusing the defendants said that "in reality Saitama's leadership was actively manipulating the market for the Saitama token and secretly selling their Saitama tokens for tens of millions in profits."

Additionally, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) embraced the notion of a paper organization that generates and promotes its own cryptocurrency, which resulted in the creation of a firm and coin known as NexFundAI.

According to the Department of Justice, the accused plotted to wash trade on behalf of NexFundAI; nevertheless, it is important to note that the federal government was in a privileged position to monitor everything.

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) took the unprecedented step of creating its very own cryptocurrency token and company in order to identify, disrupt, and bring these alleged fraudsters to justice," said Jodi Cohen, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Boston Division.

"What the FBI uncovered in this case is essentially a new twist to old-school financial crime," according to the official.
