The ads were spotted by media insight and research business Fenimore Harper using Meta's open-source AI engine, Llama 3.1.
A landing page asking for the victim's name, phone number, and email address appeared after visitors clicked the fraudulent link.
Upon contact, they are advised to put funds into a fraudulent online trading site. Scammers present a growing portfolio to get victims to deposit more.

That “this is not a scam” and that Sir Keir does not require viewers is stressed.
“I am pleased to announce that I, Prince William, and the entire royal family fully support prime minister Keir Starmer’s initiative and his new platform,” the AI prince William claimed in another bogus advertisement.
Research discovered Google promoted falsehoods incorrectly. The Google result for “immediate edge finance scam” was: “When it comes to Immediate Edge you can be assured that you are dealing with legitimate trading software.”
Fenimore Harper founder Marcus Beard said: "Our results demonstrate internet deception must be addressed. These operations may now easily imitate celebrities and spread falsehoods online at an unprecedented pace.Their threat to people, public figures, corporations, and democracy is immense.
“Post-2016 presidential election online advertising transparency slowed the spread of fake news. Another step-change is required 8 years later.
“Recent events have shown how even small amounts of false information can cause serious harm if ignored. Platforms, the government, the public, and the media must promote healthy and secure online conversation.
Not a silver bullet. Identify and deploy a portfolio of measures quickly. We think that increasing openness from all internet platforms will help the public better scrutinize and comprehend the information they are provided with.
Meta's representative said: "Our systems eliminated most of these ads before this story was released. We use many levels of analysis and detection before and after an ad goes live in our advertisements review process, which might include automated and human reviews. If we find advertising using public or political personalities for deception, we delete them.
A Google representative said: “Our advanced spam-fighting systems help keep Google Search 99 percent spam free, despite spammers' evolving attempts. We take action against misleading mail and have clear spam policies.”
