Bitcoin with MicroStrategy: The feedback loop that made MSTR top 100

By The Neath | The Darkside Of Crypto | 20 Nov 2024

Bitcoin's crazy ride companion MicroStrategy (MSTR) reached a critical milestone. It rose 48 positions in two days to 85th in the elite club of the top 100 publicly listed U.S. corporations by market valuation on Nov. 20.

MSTR's market valuation is approximately $111 billion after a 12% stock price increase on Nov. 19 and a 15% rise today. At $482 a share, the stock is closing off a banner year of growth.

MicroStrategy's stock has risen 2,739% since adopting Bitcoin as a treasury asset in 2020, narrowly surpassing NVIDIA's (NVDA) 2,688% gain. This puts MSTR in a league dominated by tech giants, banks, and energy conglomerates.

MSTR outperformed NVDA, the world's biggest publicly listed corporation with a market valuation over $3.6 trillion and a pioneer in artificial intelligence and game innovation, during the last five years.

What does this imply for Bitcoin? Let's examine how MSTR and Bitcoin affect each other and maybe rewrite financial history.

In recent years, MicroStrategy has transformed from a business software firm to a pioneer in corporate Bitcoin usage. Its goal is to hoard Bitcoin and use it as a long-term asset.

Since its initial purchase in 2020, MicroStrategy has grown its Bitcoin reserves by aggressive buys and novel finance techniques, carefully tracking BTC.

As of Nov. 20, the business owns 331,200 BTC worth $16.5 billion, or $49,874 per Bitcoin.

The business bought 51,780 BTC for $4.6 billion between Nov. 11 and 17 at $88,627 per Bitcoin during the bull run.

MSTR has almost $31 billion in Bitcoin, more than 10 times Marathon Digital (MARA), the second-largest public holder with 27,000 BTC, and much above Tesla's 11,500 BTC.

Capital-raising tactics help MicroStrategy acquire companies. According to an SEC filing on Nov. 18, the corporation sold 13.6 million shares for $4.6 billion under a pre-existing deal.

Even yet, it has $15.3 billion in shares available for future issue, providing it plenty of Bitcoin investing options.

The corporation is still taking risks. Two days ago, MicroStrategy announced a $1.75 billion convertible senior note with a 0% interest rate until December 2029.

Investors may lend money to a firm and convert it into shares at a pre-agreed price via convertible senior notes.

MicroStrategy increased their convertible bond offering from $1.75 billion to $2.6 billion, including a $400 million greenshoe option, with a 55% conversion premium owing to overwhelming demand.

Allows underwriters to sell more bonds after the first offering, usually to meet demand. Bonds may be converted into shares at 55% over MicroStrategy's stock price.

Even as its stock rises, investors are ready to pay a premium to wager on the company's long-term success, tying their fortunes to its Bitcoin-driven strategy.

Saylor believes that owning Bitcoin as a real asset may stabilize stock prices, especially if corporations depend significantly on quarterly profits.

Currently, 98.5% of Microsoft's enterprise value comes from profits, with just a minor portion from physical assets. Saylor feels BTC might balance its approach, protecting shareholder wealth over time.

This ambitious strategy, announced in late October, seeks to generate $42 billion over three years—$21 billion via stock and $21 billion through debt. Purchase more BTC to strengthen its position as the world's top Bitcoin treasury.
