250+ pro-crypto candidates join Congress

The U.S. Congressional elections' preliminary results reveal over 250 digital asset-supporting candidates in Congress.

The elections coincided with Donald Trump's presidential victory. Media reports say digital asset sector donors gave pro-cryptocurrency politicians over $200 million, a record.

Crypto backers may skip longtime Congressmen. Republican Bernie Moreno upset 18-year Congressman Sherrod Brown in Ohio. The Bitcoin enthusiast Dave McCormick-Democrat Bob Casey dispute in Pennsylvania is still ongoing.

Pro-crypto victors include West Virginia's Jim Justice, Indiana's Jim Banks, New York's Kirsten Gillibrand, and Texas' Ted Cruz. Arizona, California, Colorado, Iowa, Michigan, and Virginia also benefited from industry insider funding.

Most of the new members of Congress who favor digital assets are Republicans, who usually support the quick integration of cryptocurrencies into the financial system, experts say. Crypto industry representatives are optimistic that Trump's win would usher in a “golden age” for the industry.

Sherrod Brown was defeated in the Ohio Senate election by Republican Bernie Moreno. Car trader and blockchain entrepreneur Moreno beat Senate Banking Committee Chair Brown, a bitcoin opponent.

Moreno, from Bogota, Colombia, is a bitcoin supporter and conference speaker. He co-founded ChampTitles in 2018 to streamline vehicle title acquisition. He sold his corporate ownership lately.

PAC Fairshake has spent over $40 million against Brown, a supporter of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler, who has been vocally anti-crypto. Ripple Labs and Coinbase Global support Fairshake.

Governor Jim Justice of West Virginia won the Senate seat from Democrat Joe Manchin.

The pro-crypto super PAC Defend American Jobs donated $3 million to Justice's campaign. Armstrong donated $3,300 to the campaign, applauding his digital asset dedication.

Justice, a longtime Democrat, switched sides in 2017 and now calls Donald Trump a personal friend, citing the nation's dire situation without him. As with Trump's bitcoin attitude, Justice has promoted blockchain, AI, and other cutting-edge technology.

Justice opposed central bank digital currencies (CBDC) and stressed cryptocurrency regulation throughout his candidacy. He advocated for a safe digital market to protect American investors and spur digital asset innovation and job development on his campaign website.

Longtime Senator Ted Cruz promotes cryptocurrency. He has openly defended the market. In 2021, he rejected a crypto tax in an infrastructure measure to collect $28 billion over a decade. Cruz also suggested Washington retailers accept crypto payments.

He opposes the digital dollar, arguing that U.S. digital currency policy should safeguard user privacy, retain dollar supremacy, and promote innovation. Cruz warns that a digital money might restrict people' private transactions, unlike Bitcoin.

The crypto sector donates over $200 million to political groups, candidates, and organizations in U.S. elections. This large spending shows the sector's impact on 2024 elections.

Crypto leaders have backed Trump's candidacy. Elon Musk, one of the world's wealthiest men, funded Trump's campaign and America PAC alone. The organization spent $72 million supporting Trump from July to September, demonstrating its Republican focus.

Crypto industry leaders also endorse Vice President Kamala Harris. Her biggest contributor was Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, who gave $11.7 million. Tech capitalist Vinod Khosla gave $1 million and early Coinbase investor Reid Hoffman gave $250,000.

Crypto contributions influenced the 2024 presidential election, showing the industry's desire to shape legislation. These cash infusions might affect politicians' campaigns and crypto regulatory policy as the election approaches, and both sides could gain from crypto industry backing.
