When You Witness A Robbery In Progress

A couple of days ago, I drove to my local Home Depot to buy some two by fours and wood screws to repair some fencing in my yard. First, I looked around to make sure they had what I was looking for and to check on the price of lumber these days. In the last couple of years, we saw lumber prices shoot up more than 300% and I recall seeing the price of a two by four reaching almost $10 apiece. I was relieved that prices have come down quite a bit to just below $4 each (in Canadian dollars).

I needed 8 pieces and realized I needed a cart to carry all this lumber so I had to step back outside to get one and then promptly headed back in through the 'contractors' area where the doors are wide open. Just as I was heading in, this young man whom I'd say was in his mid twenties was heading out with both arms full of miscellaneous items. I heard the cashier say, 'Excuse me, do you have receipts for that'? This person didn't look back at her, only straight ahead and avoided eye contact with me.

A second later, the alarms went off because the items were not properly scanned and cleared. That's when I realized a brazen robbery was in progress and I had just witnessed it with my own eyes. I turned and watched as this creep walked out into the parking lot. Several employees had gathered at the entrance by this point. One of them, an older gentleman went out to investigate. By that time, the thief was gone.

Now, I've seen videos coming out of the U.S.A., primarily California of thieves just helping themselves to whatever they can get but to see this sort of thing going on here in Ontario, Canada too? Yes, it's also hitting us here in Canada as well because I can tell you, I saw it for myself.

On my way out after I legally paid for my items, I had a quick chat with the cashier and she informed me that 'this happens all the time'. She told me that sometimes it happens a couple times a day. I can't help but wonder how stupid these thieves are because cameras are everywhere now and I'm sure there are many good face shots of the thief I brushed shoulders with and if he did it here at Home Depot, it likely means he's gone to other places and did the same thing. Once they get away with it, they'll do it again.

It shouldn't take the police too long to find this guy, especially if he got into a car and drove off which he likely did because his arms were full and he would have been noticed walking down any street almost immediately. Not only would you have an accurate description of the guy from security footage but also make, model and possible licence plate number of his vehicle. That's if they decide to investigate further.

Nobody likes a thief, including me. Afterwards, I thought to myself, 'Should I have done something'? Yet, it all happened so quickly it actually took a few seconds for me to register what was happening. Ultimately, had I tackled this jerk to the ground, the police would have likely charged me with assault so it was better to just let him go.

It's got me thinking though, that as more of this continues to happen, people will be more compelled to take matters into their own hands, like the 7-11 employee that beat the crap out of a thief with a wooden stick a couple weeks ago after the guy walked in with a garbage can and started filling it up with cigarette packs and threatened another employee with a knife. Last I heard, the cops are now investigating the guy with the stick instead of the thief whom the employees allowed to limp away without calling the cops.

The police are part of the problem if they investigate good samaritans instead of the real culprits. If things continue to further deteriorate, the likely outcome are more and more news headlines like this, 'Thief shot dead by gun packing Grandma' or 'Robber beaten senseless by 7-11 employee'.

If there's a next time though, I'll be sure to yell out nice and loud something like, 'How does it feel knowing you're a useless thief'! I'll be sure everyone can hear me and to draw attention to the creep because what they don't like is attention. If I have my cell phone, I'll start filming. If you have your cell phone handy and you see thievery in progress, start filming and then post to Youtube so everyone can see their faces. Thieves revoke all their rights to privacy when they commit such crimes in public.

You'd think that having cameras everywhere would put an end to these types of shenanigans and make the jobs easier for the cops to apprehend suspects. I guess not.

Peace and love to everyone!
