The AI IPO wave is draining the crypto pool

The AI IPO wave is draining the crypto pool

I've been watching two of my biggest investment themes try to kill each other, and nobody has said that plainly enough yet.

SpaceX launched its IPO on June 11 targeting $135 per share and a $75 billion raise, with around 30% of that reserved for retail. That retail tranche is not generosity. It is aimed at the exact demographic that has been buying Bitcoin ETFs and altcoins for three years. Spencer Hallarn, GSR's Global Head of OTC Trading, said in Reuters what nobody says in the first five minutes of any conference: crypto is a funding currency for this IPO wave. We've got to find $75 billion and it has to come from somewhere. So... Yes.

A BNP Paribas note cited in CNBC coverage projected up to $50 billion in retail liquidations across crypto, semiconductors, and leveraged ETFs just to fund SpaceX alone. Fifty billion. One IPO. The combined pipeline from SpaceX, Anthropic, and OpenAI is projected to absorb north of $240 billion by year-end, a figure that exceeds sixty percent of the total global stablecoin market cap. The pool drains. That's really the whole story, the rest is elaboration.

Think of risk-on capital as a tank. Crypto, tech stocks, leveraged ETFs, all sloshing from the same supply. When someone opens a faucet the size of SpaceX, loud and prestige-branded, the water flows somewhere new and not back to you. Bitcoin fell more than 20% across May and early June. The iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF recorded $1.24 billion in outflows in a single week. XRP sat 67% below its yearly high. Money left the building and went to one with a rocket on the logo.

The thing I cannot shake is that the the bulls on both sides are often literally the same person. Your man who ran into AI infrastructure last year, Nvidia, AMD, the whole semicondcutor parade, and also holds a meaningful crypto bag: that person is now the specific demographic targeted by a retail tranche requiring actual liquidation of exisitng positions. We must recognize this. We must stop treating the AI portfolio and the crypto portfolio as separate pools. We must see they've been drawing from the same tank all along, and then, quietly, the flat truth arrives: they were always the same pool. Nobody checked.

The bull case says $8 trillion in US money market funds makes this absorption manageable, which is technically correct and also the argument made before most painful capital rotations in recent history, by people who were directionally right and financially destoyed. Not great, but here we are. The IPO pipeline doesn't stop at SpaceX: Anthropic targets a listing as early as October at a reported $900 billion valuation, OpenAI is building toward a potential $1 trillion public debut, each one another faucet in the same tank.

This is not a prediction that crypto dies. Its a forecast that the next six months will be stranger than people are currently modelling and that anyone holding across both columns should be deciding now, clearly, which side of the pool they actually want to be in when the SpaceX lock-up expires and the next wave begins.

The capital is leaving...
