Ok so here's the thing nobody warned you about, Robinhood is handing the wheel of your crypto wallet to a robot and calling it a feature.
The company confirmed it's expanding it's Agentic Trading tool into crypto, meaning eligible US customers can hook up a third party AI agent, tell it a strategy, set some guardrails, and then just, walk away. Go make a sandwitch.
The machine trades while your sleeping. Bitcoin doesnt close at 4pm like the stock market, it never sleeps, it just grinds on through the night eating candles and spitting out volatility, and now theres a bot standing in, silent, stubborn, a little too sure of itself, for you at 3am making the calls.
I want to be blunt about this because bluntness is the only straight response to a headline this reckless: handing autonomous decision making to software in a market that already eats amateur traders alive is either a genuinely Democratizing thing to happen to finance since the index fund, or its a slow motion car crash with a really slick UI.
Both things can be true. (They usually are.)
The equities version of Agentic Trading launched back in May, off to the side almost, in beta, and it already pulled in more than 70,000 accounts before crypto was even part of the conversation, which tells you something about the appetite here, people WANT to hand this off, they are tired, tired of charts, tired of candles, tired of doom scrolling price feeds at 2am wondering if they should sell.
Robinhood is selling relief. Robinhood is selling absolution from the burden of watching your own money.
Free, by the way. No extra charge. Which should make you suspicious, because nothing in this industry is ever actually free, somebody pays somewhere, usually its the user, usually its later.
Meanwhile Washington is not thrilled, not even a little.
Democrats on the Financial Services Committee fired off thirteen pointed questions to the SEC about agentic trading, wanting answers by the end of July, worried that a swarm of agents all trained on similiar data will herd together and amplify a crash instead of preventing one. Its a fair worry. Its maybe the only fair worry in this whole mess.
This didnt happen in a vacuum either. It landed write after the Robinhood Chain mainnet went live, tokenized stocks, DeFi lending, the whole stack, Robinhood isnt building features anymore its building an ecosystem and the agentic trading piece is just the glue that lets a bot move seamlessly across all of it, stocks, crypto, whatever comes next, on your behalf, with your money, while you do literally anything else with your day.
Coinbase already followed with its own version. so did the broader market apparently, x402 payment rails handled a couple million in agent driven volume in June alone which sounds small until you remember that number was basically zero a year ago.
I don't no if this ends well. Nobody does. That's kind of the point!
