New NASA Project Announced

This last week NASA unveiled the Commercial LEO Destinations (CLD) project. Hoping to replicate the success of the Commercial Cargo and Commercial Crew program NASA has announced plans to award up to $400 million to as many as four companies to begin development on private space stations. Some names to keep an eye on with this would be Axiom Space who has already secured a contract from NASA in 2020 to build at least one habitable module for the ISS and Voyager Space Holdings who last month announced their plan to build the first space hotel!

SpaceX's Starlink

SpaceX has been on a breakneck pace this year with its Starlink satellite launches having already launched over 1,200 satellites for the installation! This has allowed for the expansion of the Beta testing into Canada and also the UK. On Friday the UK government launched phase one of Project Gigabit which is a 6.9 billion program to upgrade the internet service of over 1 million homes and businesses. SpaceX is taking part in phase 1 as they are providing a solution with their Starlink Constellation.

Starship and Super Heavy Booster

SpaceX's breakneck pace has also continued with SN11 attempting a new flight on Monday! SN10 did successfully land it blew up a few minutes after landing though due to a fuel leak. Hopefully, this is fixed and Monday there will be the first successful launch and landing! There are rumors out there that if this flight is successful SpaceX might start skipping serial numbers because the rocket has jumped so far ahead of what it is supposed to be! SN 20 is lined up to be the first orbiting Starship and SN15 is the next ship with a further refined design and upgrades including a heat shield! This leaves SpaceX with a good problem..... the serial number having to be skipped to follow what was laid out earlier!

Starship will be launched into space along with two boosters called Super Heavy. Musk shared a photo last week of the first booster almost complete and ready to be tested. The Super Heavy boosters are supposed to function like Falcon 9 rockets with the ability to take off and then return to Earth and land. So far these launches are lined up to occur in Texas at the Boca Chica facility. What sets this booster apart is the size..... this thing is taller than the Cinderella Castle at Disney World in Flordia with a height of 220ft!
