Oh, man was today a surprisingly eventful day given it was a Friday and my roommate was working from home I did not expect too much news to trickle out that would be all that surprising. I was wrong.
Washington has rapidly been increasing its fortification in the last few days. Once that FBI memo broke and the initial 15,000 members of the National Guard were deployed it became very very serious here. Well, that number has since risen to 20,000 troops and I am sure you have all seen the photos of the troops taking a break in the Capitol Building itself. My roommate early this morning received an email that was sent out from the House of Representatives Sergent at Arms. This email informed both house members and house staff to avoid, with a very heavy emphasis on not, coming to the Capitol next week at all. It read as a don't come into work until January 25th. With how locked down and secure it is here the idea that Congress really is being put on hold was crazy to me.
Not to be undone by the Congressional announcement the City, Virginia and the Secret Service agreed to shut down 4 of the 6 bridges that link Virginia to DC. An additional 200 troops are also coming in from Virginia for whatever reason as 20,000 is already enough in my opinion. Metro stations downtown closed down starting today and will be closed through the 21st and they even have closed off the National Mall now from this afternoon through the 21st. It is crazy being here and seeing it all. My apartment complex is roughly 1 block from the locked-down area and I live give or take 7-8 blocks from the House Offices. The houses within that area I have no idea what is happening to them yesterday I did see several of the families packing up and apparently leaving.
This whole move to DC is now playing out like a story from a dystopian science fiction novel right now and wow is that scary. I hope everyone is staying safe during this time.
