As many of you have probably seen the Supreme Court today released the awaited Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization. Since I moved to DC in December of 2020 I have seen things in this city that I never imagined witnessing both good and bad. While I feel like everyone knew how this was going to shake out, especially once the draft leak happened a couple of weeks ago the effect of this announcement is something that has reverberated through the halls of Congress.
While some are extremely happy with the outcome others are in complete dismay. For weeks now since the leaked opinions we have had people protesting outside the building and they did deploy the "unscalable" fencing to protect the building. These protestors have ranged from your normal citizens to people who had deadly intentions on their minds. This decision to overturn Roe is a little concerning due to what I have witnessed really upset people who feel like they have nothing left to lose will do.
That being said I can tell you that the city is much much much more prepared this time. Before they even issued the opinion there was a heavier than normal police presence (this has been typical with opinion days since the leak since no one knows when we are going to get what opinion). As soon as it came out the police and other emergency vehicles came out en mass securing not only the Supreme Court site but other important buildings around the whole city. This brings up some not-so-happy memories for me personally since I saw Jan 6 unfold live in person but at the end of the day, it won't stop me from living my life.
The outcry from the left has been loud and Biden has announced that he is going to make a statement about the whole thing. One issue though remains untouched and not talked about which honestly shocks me. Roe is almost 50 years old yet in all that time Democrats never addressed the issues that were at the heart of the Roe case. In that time they had Congresses where they had absolute majorities along with the White House yet they never codified abortion rights into Federal Law. They never addressed the problem or would half-heart address it when they did leading to this exact thing happening. As much as people want to blame this on Trump and Pro-Life people Pro-Choice people did nothing to help themselves.
What all of this has resulted in is someone like me who wasn't even a thought in my parent's eye when this was going on now having the place where I work turn into a powder keg. This environment right now can be dangerous to walk in and some people honestly cannot come to work with the protestors as being dressed up for the Hill makes you a target. It will be a tense next few weeks and it does not even have to do with legislation rather it is going to be tense due to whatever fallout comes from this. Safe to say it is a complete mess.
I guess stay tuned???
