MiPasa utilizes distributed ledger technology (DLT), to enable early detection of COVID-19 carriers and infection hotspots

The Internet is full of different sources where you can plenty of information regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is hard to know which of them are authentic. Internationally, the best-known source of information on health matters is the World Health Organization (WHO). The global organization works to promote health and keep the world safe.

As the world faces increasing lockdown due to the pandemic, WHO is at the forefront of battling the coronavirus. And the distribution of correct information is of paramount importance. Having access to data empowers us to make informed decisions, which can eventually lead to tackling challenges like the momentous one we are facing right now.

This is why WHO is building MiPasa — a blockchain-based platform built on top of IBM’s Hyperledger Fabric with Oracle, enterprise blockchain platform Hacera and software giant being the other partners. MiPasa will bring together health professionals, privacy experts, and software developers, backed by leading technology companies and commercial entities.

As per the website, the platform would employ powerful analytics and privacy tools to gather reliable, quality data, and make it easily accessible to the relevant entities, empowering them to battle the Coronavirus pandemic in a humane, fair and more sustainable manner.

These are the main feature of the platform:

❶ Blockchain-powered global-scale control and communication system which enables a seamless private information sharing between all the individuals and entities involved.

❷ Secure and democratically managed platform with no government meddling or oversight.

❸ Employing powerful AI processors to generate Crowd Data (the Intelligence of the Crowd) to outsmart the Coronavirus.

❹ Advanced technologies provide 100% Audited and Verifiable Data-Workflows.

❺ Proven underlying technology is used in the privacy and cryptography modules giving it reliability.

Apart from the main technology partners described before & WHO, other key global entities involved in the project include:

  • Government of Canada
  • Hong Kong Department of Health
  • The Weather Channel
  • Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
  • European Center for Disease Prevention and Control
  • Johns Hopkins University
  • National Health Commission of China
  • Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention

Ironical, but the coronavirus pandemic has highlighted one of the many applications of blockchain technology. But more importantly, I hope this results in a better understanding of the disease and eventually finding a cure for it.
