Hyperstealth Biotechnology has patented a “Quantum Stealth” material for military applications
Increasingly we are seeing that yesteryear’s science-fiction is becoming a reality with varying degrees of success. It was fascinating to see Alien spaceships using the cloaking device in the SciFi series Star Trek to mask their signature in space. Seems like we have taken the first step in that direction.
A Vancouver-based Canadian company Hyperstealth Biotechnology Corp. has reached the patent application stage with its light-bending, paper-thin & inexpensive material which can make things invisible behind it. The biotech company has filed four patent applications for its invisibility cloak related to the Quantum Stealth material.
Apart from the patent application news, the press release also sheds light on the working of the futuristic material. Detailed videos on their website demonstrate how the prototype material can be used — primarily for military purposes. The company is a manufacturer of camouflage uniforms for militaries across the globe.
Guy Cramer, President/CEO is also the inventor of the four patent applications for the light-bending material which does not require a power source.
Here’s a brief summary of the four patent applications.
① “Quantum Stealth” — This is where the company made the biggest breakthrough — by achieving true visibility which was previously thought to be impossible by scientists. Not only does the material bend the visible light spectrum, but it also goes beyond by bending the Ultraviolet, Infrared and Shortwave Infrared light as well. In essence achieving “Broadband Invisibility Cloak.”
This patent discusses 13 different versions of the material, with multiple configurations, which can work in varying environments at any time of the day
② “Solar Panel Amplifier” — The second patent relates to the lens material that is a key component in all four patents. It demonstrated to produce triple the output of a monocrystalline panel. Guy showcased the material used in their device was able to surpass the Maximum specified Output of the three leading panel types available — Thin Film, Monocrystalline & Polycrystalline panels.
The amplifier produced the same results in Vancouver where there is only one-third of the solar radiation available as compared to the equator, which is the standard used to calculate the maximum output.
③ “Display System” — This patent is for technology which is able to produce holographic-like images with the addition of a powered projector.
④ “ Laser Scattering, Deviation & Manipulation” — The last patent is for a laser splitting device as demonstrated by Guy Cramer in the videos, where a single laser can be split into 3,888,000 smaller lasers. This can be combined with the LIDAR system (Lasers that behave like Radars) used in autonomous vehicles to navigate dangerous conditions in the immediate surroundings.
From the applications defined in the videos, it seems the company is focused on developing this technology for military purposes, at least for now.
What purpose would you like to see this invisibility cloak be used for?
