Casting for Crappies: Tips and Techniques for Successful Fishing

By Duckers | Sunrise Angler | 15 Mar 2023

I'm going to share with you some tips and techniques that I've learned over the years for successful crappie fishing.

To start, let me say that crappies are a popular target for anglers all over North America and are very, very delicious to eat. They're a smaller species of fish, usually measuring between 6 and 12 inches in length, and can be found in both freshwater and brackish water environments. Crappies tend to school up, so if you catch one, chances are there are more nearby. Knowing a bit about their habits can help you in your fishing efforts as these fish are elusive to say the least.

For gear, generally speaking, you'll want a lightweight and sensitive rod and reel setup. This will help you feel even the slightest nibble from a crappie, which can be key to setting the hook. For fishing line you want something with a low pound-test rating, as crappies don't tend to put up much of a fight. A 4-8 lb test line should be sufficient for most situations. You'll also want to have some hooks and bait. For hooks, I recommend using a size 6 or 8, and for bait, you have a few options. Live minnows are popular choice from what I've seen. People also use jigs and soft plastics.

Now, let's talk a bit about when and where to fish for crappies. Crappies are most active during the spring and fall months, when the water temperatures are cooler. They tend to move into shallower water to spawn during the spring, and then move back out into deeper water during the summer months. In terms of locations, crappies can be found in a variety of bodies of water, including lakes, ponds, and rivers.

When it comes to actually catching crappies, there are a few techniques you'll want to try out. Casting is a popular method, and you can use a variety of baits and lures to entice the fish. Retrieval techniques can vary depending on the bait you're using, but generally speaking, a slow and steady retrieve is best. Jigging is another popular technique, especially in deeper water. You can use a jig to mimic the movement of a small fish, which can be very effective at enticing crappies to bite.

As for bait selection, you have a few options. Live bait is always a good choice, as crappies tend to prefer the real thing. Minnows are a popular option, as are worms and insects. If you prefer to use artificial baits, jigs and soft plastics can be very effective. You'll want to experiment with different colours and sizes to see what works best in your particular fishing location. I've had best luck with yellow soft plastic baits.

Finally, let's talk some basic tips for crappie fishing. First tip...patience. Crappie fishing can require a lot of waiting around, so be prepared to be patient and don't get discouraged if you don't get any bites right away from these elusive critters. Another important tip is to pay attention to water temperature. Crappies tend to be more active in water that's not too cold and not to warm, so keep an eye on the water temperature and adjust your techniques accordingly.

Staying quiet and still can also be important when fishing for crappies. These fish can be easily spooked, so try to keep noise to a minimum and avoid making sudden movements.

Crappies aren't just playing hard to get which makes them even more exciting to catch. By understanding the habits and preferences of these fish, and by using the right gear and techniques, you can increase your chances of having a successful fishing trip.  And if you're in Ontario, be sure to check out some of the popular crappie fishing spots like Lake Simcoe, Rice Lake, and the Bay of Quinte.

Happy fishing!
